Ethernet typically manifests both in hardware and software to collectively provide the physical connectivity and processing capabilities just noted (more specific details are in the next section). More formally, Ethernet is defined by the IEEE 802.32 standard and enables half-duplex (transmitting in one direction at a time over a shared physical medium) as well as full-duplex (simultaneously transmitting in both directions) data communication, and provides the underlying capabilities across three architectural layers: Physical, Media Access Control (MAC) and the Logical Link Control (LLC) these are discussed in some detail next. These capabilities correspond to those provided by the first two layers in the OSI Reference Model3: Physical and Data-Link Layers, or Layer 1 and 2, respectively. This is shown in Figure 1.1 and it should be clear that the MAC and LLC sub layers in the IEEE model are intended to have the same function as the Data-Link Layer alone, in the OSI model. Physical layer The Physical layer, at the bottom of the OSI/IEEE stack, is concerned with the actual physical transmission of raw bits4 over the (physical5) media. This layer specifies the physical interface on a device connected to a LAN and also the associated cabling. Typically, the physical connectivity manifests in a transceiver, the Network Interface Card (NIC), that physically plugs into a device s (could be a computer or for that matter any device requiring Ethernet connectivity) motherboard. A NIC is identified by a three-part nomenclature based on the attributes of the physical connection: transmission rate, transmission method, and media type or signaling. For example, 10Base-T indicates a 10 Mbps baseband6 over two twisted-pair cables, while a 1000Base-LX refers to 1000 Mbps, based band, long wavelength over fiber. Each of the NICs has a unique static address (assigned by the manufacturer from a block of addresses purchased from the IEEE); this address is referred to as its MAC or Ethernet address, and it is based on a flat-addressing space7 and uses 6 bytes written in a hexadecimal format. Data-Link layer (DLL) layer The Data-Link layer provides the functionality to transfer data bits between entities in a network (basically between the numerous computers that are inter-connected) and detects and corrects, if necessary, any errors that occur at the Physical layer. In effect, its role is to ensure transmission free of errors.

This command displays the IP routing table on your router and can contain directly connected subnets, static and default routes, and dynamically learned routes from a routing protocol. The top portion of the display for this command has a table of codes. These codes, which describe a type of route that may appear in the routing table, are shown in the first column at the bottom part of the display. In this example, there are two connected routes (C) and two static routes (S). The first static route is treated as a directly connected route, since it was created by specifying the interface to exit the router. The second static route is a default route the asterisk (*) indicates the gateway of last resort: the path the router should use if no other specific path is available.
Digital Theater Systems (DTS) Digital Surround uses the Coherent Acoustics differential subband perceptual audio transform coder, which is similar to the Dolby Digital audio coder. It uses polyphase filters to break the audio into subbands (usually 32) of varying bandwidths and then uses ADPCM (Adaptive Differential Pulse Code Modulation) to compress each subband. The ADPCM step is a linear predictive coding that guesses at the next value in the sequence and then encodes only the difference. The prediction coefficients are quantized based on psychoacoustic and transient analysis and then are variable-length coded using entropy tables. DTS decoders include downmixing features using either preset downmix coefficients or custom coefficients embedded in the stream. Dynamic range control and other user data can be included in the stream to be used in post-decoder processes. The DTS Coherent Acoustics format used for discs is different from the format used in theaters, which is Audio Processing Technology s apt-X, a straight ADPCM coder with no psychoacoustic modeling. An addition to the statistically lossless group of codecs is the DTS-HD variable bitrate (VBR) codec. Built on the existing DTS foundation, the DTS-HD codec takes a backward compatible, hierarchical approach to implementing lossless compression. The encoded data is composed of a normal DTS core plus an additional extension to achieve lossless compression. Both DTS and DTS-HD are built upon the same Coherent Acoustics technology, which defines a core + extension structure for audio coding. The core component is typically composed of either 768 kbps or 1.509 Mbps 5.1-channel 48 kHz encoded audio. For DTS audio, the coded audio is composed of a single core substream that contains the core audio data plus zero or one optional extension. For DTS-HD, however, at least one extension substream exists, which can contain one or two extension units. A legacy DTS encoder only pays attention to the core substream, while a new DTS-HD decoder will use both the core substream and the extension substream to provide an enhanced experience. The core substream is essentially equivalent to the DTS audio that has been used in the past on DVD titles. The new extension substream in DTS-HD is what allows it to transcend even that high quality experience, providing additional channels (up to 7.1), lossless compression, increased sampling rates (96 kHz, or 192 kHz for lossless encoding), and additional data rates (up to 24.5 Mbps). The extensions supported by the legacy DTS codec include XCH and X96. The DTS-HD codec adds XXCH, XBR and XLL.

Similar to the Interactive User Operations for HDMV menus, there are controls available for BD-J menus. Because BD-J is using a programming language instead of a simple command set, the remote control or keyboard buttons will be tracked via Virtual Key (VK) events. Each VK is mapped to a button on the remote control or keyboard. For BD-J menus, event listeners must be implemented in the code to listen for the virtual keys. If the user pushes a button on the remote control, the event listener for the VK registers the event and an appropriate action is followed as defined in the programming. There are four groups of Virtual Keys defined in the specification Playback Key Events handle playback control issues; Numeric Key Events register entries on the numeric keypad; Interactive Key Events handle navigation, and there are four Color Key Events (Table 6.9). The color keys may be used as additional buttons if needed for an application. For example, a BD-J game may need a couple of additional buttons on the remote control to ease the navigation tasks. The color keys are inherited from settop boxes as used for digital TV receivers, and they are always red, green, yellow, and blue. Unfortunately, the order of the keys is not specified and, thus, varies from country to country. Further, the color VKs are numbered from zero to three and it is recommended to query the order of the color keys before representing them on-screen.
