High-capacity line-of-sight microwave radio systems generally use high-density modulation schemes such as 64-QAM and 256-QAM; short-range, low-capacity systems operating at high microwave frequencies typically use 4-PSK (4-level phase shift keying, also referred to as QPSK).

There are currently two versions of the C++ object-oriented I/O library in use: the older one that is based upon the original specifications for C++ and the newer one defined by Standard C++. The old I/O library is supported by the header file <iostream.h>. The new I/O library is supported by the header <iostream>. For the most part, the two libraries appear the same to the programmer. This is because the new I/O library is, in essence, simply an updated and improved version of the old one. In fact, the vast marjority of differences between the two occur beneath the surface, in the way that the libraries are implemented not in how they are used. From the programmer s perspective, there are two main differences between the old and new C++ I/O libraries. First, the new I/O library contains a few additional features and defines some new data types. Thus, the new I/O library is essentially a superset of the old one. Nearly all programs originally written for the old library will compile without substantive changes when the new library is used. Second, the old-style I/O library was in the global namespace. The new-style library is in the std namespace. (Recall that the std namespace is used by all of the Standard C++ libraries.) Since the old-style I/O library is now obsolete, this book describes only the new I/O library, but most of the information is applicable to the old I/O library as well.

Certain key phrases are readily available to you if you d like to suggest an outing or an activity to someone. These phrases include indirect object pronouns, which will be explained in greater depth later in this chapter. For the phrases that follow, you only need to pay attention to using the correct indirect object form for you. Note that the singular polite forms are presented and the familiar forms are enclosed in brackets. When you become more familiar with indirect object pronouns, you may substitute the plural forms for you in any of these sentences. In each case, the conjugated verb must be followed by an infinitive. For now, concentrate on committing these phrases to memory, because they are so useful in a wide variety of situations.

C# supports two types of lambda expressions, and it is the lambda body that determines what type is being created. If the lambda body consists of a single expression, then an expression lambda is being created. In this case, the body is free-standing it is not enclosed between braces. If the lambda body consists of a block of statements enclosed by braces, then a statement lambda is being created. A statement lambda can contain multiple statements and include such things as loops, method calls, and if statements. The following sections describe both kinds of lambdas.

perform their negotiation and the connection has been authenticated (if this has been defined), the data link layer will come up (the status of a router s interface will be up, line protocol is up ). Once a connection is enabled, LCP uses error detection to monitor dropped data on the connection as well as loops at the data link layer. The Quality and Magic Numbers protocol is used by LCP to ensure that the connection remains reliable.
ling the gain of the ampli ers at both the high and low end of the frequency band. At one time it was thought that alternating between controlled ampli ers and non-gain-controlled ampli ers (manual gain controlled) was suf cient to maintain a constant output level. However, as greater bandwidths and higher levels were needed as systems expanded in distance and in the number of channels, every ampli er in a trunk cascade had automatic gain control (AGC), which then became the standard. As distance requirements for cable plants increased, better ampli ers were needed. Ampli ers that had high-level output, lower noise, and distortion speci cation were also developed. The feed-forward ampli er improved third-order distortion speci cation and was useful in long ampli er cascades where third-order distortion was a limiting factor. The power-doubling ampli er provided higher signal levels in long cascades and in feeder branches that contained a large amount of subscriber taps. Many ampli er manufacturers provide a broad selection of ampli ers that aid system designers in designing ef cient and economical cable plants. The power-doubling and feed-forward designed ampli ers enabled coaxial cable trunk lines to be extended farther into the system. Cable system operators could install the reverse ampli er modules into sections of the coaxial trunk to activate the sections desired for two-way service. The required extra system power needed to activate a trunk feed or return feed should be designed into the system in the rst place to avoid having to upgrade the power system. 1.215 The cable system ampli ers in present-day systems are greatly improved over the previous type. Earlier ampli ers lacked proper thermal stability, causing the gain to shift. Thermal compensation devices that appeared in the newer designs took care of this problem. Since cable characteristics also change with temperature, AGC became a necessary addition to the ampli ers. The AGC method employed the use of a low-frequency and highfrequency pilot whose signal level was used as a reference level for the automatic control of system signal level. Coupled with the built-in thermal compensation, the overall temperature problem was under control. Now, system signal levels for long trunk ampli er cascades were stabilized and subscriber signal levels did not vary. As solid-state technology advanced into the integrated circuit area, ampli ers in cable television systems improved immensely. Less power was consumed, and thermal stability improved because much of the circuitry was contained in the same IC chip. Now with automatic gain and

sample. The measured property is then plotted as a function of the wavelength or frequency of the radiation; the resulting plot is called a spectrum (plural: spectra). See also spectroscopy. Endocytosis A process whereby a portion of the cell membrane folds in toward the cell, engulfing some molecule or molecules from outside the cell. This portion of membrane then breaks off from the membrane, forming a vesicle that carries the engulfed contents into the cell. Endomembrane system A set of membranous organelles that work together in eukaryotic cells; the endomembrane system includes the endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi apparatus, nuclear envelope, and other membranous organelles. Endoplasmic reticulum A network of folded membranes, in eukaryotic cells, that provides a surface on which various biochemical reactions are carried out. Energy path How the energy of a system changes (ups and downs) over the course of time or throughout the duration of a process. Enthalpy A thermodynamic quantity equal to internal energy plus pressurevolume energy. Enthalpy driven A spontaneous (favorable) process in which the change in enthalpy makes a favorable contribution to the Gibbs energy change, but the entropy change is either unfavorable or negligible. The enthalpy change is primarily responsible for the favorable Gibbs energy change. Entropy The amount of energy contained in a system that cannot be transformed into work. Entropy is also a measure or the amount of disorder in a system: the more disordered the energy of a system is, the less of that energy can be transformed into work. Entropy driven A spontaneous (favorable) process in which the change in entropy makes a favorable contribution to the Gibbs energy change, but the enthalpy change is either unfavorable or negligible. The entropy change is primarily responsible for the favorable Gibbs energy change. Environmental biophysics The branch of biophysics that deals with physics of the relationship between organisms and their environment. Enzyme A protein that acts as a catalyst. Ester A type of carbonyl group very similar to carboxyl, but where the hydroxyl hydrogen or the carboxyl group has been replaced with a carbon atom.

Benefits The Camino MOB project team estimated that on a $94.5 million contract the client saved approximately $1.2 million, attributed to the modeling and coordination using VDC tools. Some of the specific benefits include the following: 1. Increased field productivity. The HVAC subcontractor was able to achieve a 20 to 33 percent increase in field productivity due to the prefabrication of systems that resulted from the use of VDC tools for MEP coordination. Figure 5.1.20 shows the actual field productivity of the duct and pipe installation work compared with the estimated productivity during the course of installation of both the duct and piping systems. 2. Zero field conflicts among systems modeled and coordinated using VDC tools. On the Camino MOB project, there were zero field conflicts among systems that were modeled and coordinated using VDC tools. Normally on comparable projects, the superintendents estimate is that there would be about 100 to 200 conflicts that get resolved in the field if the SCOP method is used for coordination. 3. Only 43 hours of rework out of 25,000 hours worked. The team has only needed to complete 43 hours of rework out of 25,000 hours worked. Although there is not an official study as to how this compares to other projects, the project team believes that this is a phenomenal number compared to projects where the coordination is done in a 2D SCOP process. 4. Only six RFIs related to field conflicts. There were only six RFIs dealing with field conflicts. These RFIs were for conflicts between systems that were not modeled in 3D space. The project team members estimate that this is about 5 to 10 percent of what they typically see on comparable projects coordinated using the 2D SCOP process. 5. Increased planning reliability on the project. The Camino MOB project tracked the planning reliability using the percent plan complete (PPC) metric, which is the
