If you notice problems when playing a disc, you may be able to correct them with a simple cleaning. Do not use strong cleaners, abrasives, solvents, or acids. With a soft, lint-free cloth, wipe gently in only a radial direction (in a straight line between the hub and the rim). Since the data is arranged circularly on the disc, the microscratches you create when cleaning the disc will cross more error correction blocks and be less likely to cause unrecoverable errors. Do not use canned or compressed air, which can be very cold from rapid expansion and may stress the disc thermally. For stubborn dirt or gummy adhesive, use water, water with mild soap, or isopropyl alcohol. As a last resort, try peanut oil. Let it sit for about a minute before wiping it off. Commercial products are available to clean discs, and they provide some protection from dust, fingerprints, and scratches. Cleaning products labeled for use on CDs work as well as those that say they are for DVDs and BDs.

Figure 4.32 shows a pair of isolation diodes. The diodes make it possible to leave both batteries connected directly to the alternator output without the danger of one battery draining the other. Because the diodes look like closed circuits in the forward direction, they also solve the open-alternator problem. The big problem with isolation diodes is that they drop the voltage from alternator to battery by 0.6 to 1.0 volt, requiring the voltage regulator to be adjusted upward by the same amount to compensate. Most boaters are not aware of the voltage drop, so their batteries are chronically, severely undercharged and suffer early demise. Figure 4.33 shows a setup incorporating a series regulator. When house and starting batteries are of different size or type, one of the batteries will end up overcharged while the other is undercharged, shortening the lives of both. A series regulator, such as Ample Power s Eliminator, is designed to solve this problem. The alternator s regulator is set up for the optimum charging of the house battery. At the same time the series regulator, set up for the characteristics of the starting battery, siphons some of the charging current to charge it. The parallel switch can be used either to bypass the series regulator or to combine the battery outputs.

At the headend point in a cable system, the signals that make up the system s product are assembled and grouped according to the channel lineup. This channel lineup or grouping is usually the result of an agreement between the cable operator and the licensing or franchising municipal authority. The signal quality at this point in the system is as good as it s ever going to be. It s the job of the distribution system to deliver this product as perfectly as possible to the system subscriber. At the headend the electronic equipment cleans up and adjusts the signal level on a channelby-channel basis. Off-air signal processors remove signal level variations and lter unwanted noise and interference products. An Earth receiving antenna and receiver set picks up satellite programming and reduces the resulting signal to its base band. This base-band signal is the usual NTSC video and sound signal or a digital bit stream. In most cases this digital signal is decoded further into video and audio signals, which then are converted to standard NTSC signal for subscribers television sets. More people in the television viewing public are purchasing largescreen HDTV sets with a 16 :9 aspect ratio. Such sets usually offer a standard NTSC tuner as well as a digital HDTV tuner; these tuners allow the subscriber to view both types of signals. The satellite signals that appear as standard NTSC are modulated onto a standard television channel and connected to the cable system. Digital signals are usually in the standard MPEG-2 or MPEG-4 format and are carried by the cable systems using digital modulators of the QAM 64 or 256 format. Most subscribers with digital TV sets have the capability to receive in the digital mode the broadcast station format of eight-level vestigial sideband (8-VSB) or the QAM 64 or 256 format. At the headend all the channels are combined down to a single point needed to drive the cable trunk system. All signals from the broadcast networks, satellite systems, microwave systems, as well as any locally generated programming enter the cable trunk system from the headend. Many cable operators have some form of bidirectional operation signals that arrive from many points in the system back to the headend. Cable operation in the reverse direction is usually in the 5 to 30 MHz reverse band, which is below the lowest television carrier in the forward direction, which is television channel 2. At the headend the signals are received, processed, and delivered to the appropriate destination. Here the control of the cable system exists, hence the building housing the headend equipment should be closely environmentally controlled

typically channel 3 or 4. The modulator for cable television use is vastly different from this type of device. In Figure 3-14, notice that there are two video inputs and two audio inputs. One is the main channel and the other is the alternate channel, which is controlled by a selector switch. The switch can also have the option to switch to the alternate source upon loss of the main input video signal. The alternate source can be a simple please stand by or some other appropriate message. Just about any signal can either be introduced or outputted for a variety of applications. Options provide for full video/audio metering and system phase-locking capability. Manufacturers of headend equipment offer cable systems a variety of television modulators from extremely compact types to larger ones containing a large selection of options. Some modulators have a selectable or tunable output and can be considered as a sort of universal device. Often these modulators do not have a selectable band-pass output lter

even just perspectives, the employees will give their loyalty to whoever writes their annual review at the end of the year the person who determines their salary and bonus. Just because a company implements matrix management, that doesn t mean you should avoid it; Microsoft has done so for years with considerable success. But it s something to know about going in. During your interviewing, if your prospective boss starts talking about how you ll have a dotted line reporting relationship to someone else, you re probably seeing matrix management at work. Find out who will actually be writing your review.
