The following tips, some of them gleaned from the previous interview, can improve your results when setting up the artwork for a disc design. These guidelines were adapted from the Spring 1999 issue of CD-ROM Access, published quarterly by Disc Makers. A free subscription is available by signing up at: www.discmakers.com/cdrom or by calling 1-800-237-6666. Keep your design simple. The standard line screen is 85 lines per inch (lpi) or about the same screen ruling as you nd in newspaper print. Also, the tonal range allowed is 15% to 85%, which means that tints less than 15% may not show up and tones darker than 85% may close up. These factors limit the amount of detail that you can present in an image. Work from a manufacturer s template. Each manufacturer s CD has a slightly different printable area depending on the mold they use, so only their templates will be perfectly accurate for their CD work. Bleeds, design areas that run past the outer edge of the printed media, are not permitted. CD label proofs usually show more detail than the actual on-disc silk-screen print and do not always give an accurate impression of what these kinds of problem areas will look like. As many as four or ve spot PMS colors can be printed, but this is not the same as full-color process printing. If a white area instead of a silver background is desired, a donut of white ink can be laid down rst. Any of these on-disc print options involve additional cost. Full-color process printing is also available for additional cost. There are two varieties of this: silkscreened (85-line screen, but

Aqueous solutions always contain some hydrogen ions (H+) and hydroxyl ions (OH ). Since a hydrogen atom is just one proton and one electron, a hydrogen cation (H+) is really just a proton in solution. Molecules or functional groups that increase the concentration of protons in solution are called acids. Those that decrease the concentration of protons are called bases. For example, amines easily bind protons (because of their nonbonded valence electrons). Binding protons reduces the proton concentration in solution, and so amines are considered basic. Phosphates easily release protons and so phosphates are considered acidic. Sometimes bases decrease the concentration of protons by increasing the concentration of hydroxyl ions (OH ). The hydroxyl ions bind to protons and thereby decrease the concentration of protons. We measure the concentration of protons in units of pH (pronounced peeaych ). The pH is approximately equal to the negative base-ten logarithm of the proton concentration. A pH of 7 means H+ is at a concentration of 10 7 moles per liter. Pure water has a pH of 7 and is considered neutral. A pH less than 7 means a higher concentration of H+ (e.g., pH = 3 means 10 3 moles per liter which is greater than 10 7 moles per liter). Acidic substances (those that increase H+) therefore lower the pH, whereas bases increase pH. Since water, with a pH of 7, is considered neutral, measurement of pH is considered to range from pH = 0 for the most acidic substances to pH = 14 for the most basic substances.

In the context of protocol analysis, simulation can take two forms: protocol simulation and protocol emulation. Protocol simulation. Protocol simulation allows the user to send strings of data containing selected protocol headers along with the encapsulated data. In this way, the operation of a network device can be simulated for the purpose of testing a suspected problem or for establishing a link to confirm operation. Protocol emulation. Protocol emulators are software programs that control the operation of the protocol analyzer automatically. Selecting a Redundancy Solution Because the database contains all the static and dynamic information for the access farm, the database server should always remain online. The entire access farm fails if the database server goes down. For this reason, be sure to have scheduled backups, as well as a fault-tolerance solution, that fit your organization s business requirements. The redundancy solution you choose depends greatly on the business requirements. Table 19-9 illustrates the recommended redundancy solutions based on the business needs for an acceptable restoration time. The times given are specific to XYZ Corp and may not apply to all deployment situations. These times are provided as a general guideline for weighing the benefits and costs of each solution.

Most receivers are of the down-conversion type, which takes the RF input and immediately begins to convert it either to a single lower IF or down to two or more increasingly lower IFs. The other type of receiver, called the up-converting superhet, is operated in wide-tuning-range applications, and is especially dominant in HF SSB ham radios. It takes the incoming RF and converts it to some higher frequency typically about twice the highest expected receive frequency to distance the image frequency from the LO to assure simple RF front-end filtering. Up-converting is rarely seen at VHF and above. A standard double down-conversion superhet receiver block diagram is shown in Fig. 9.1. First, the antenna picks up the electromagnetic waves from the environment and, because of its natural passive gain, amplifies any signals that are within its bandwidth. The inductor L1 short-circuits static buildup on the antenna to ground to prevent it from entering, and possibly damaging, the delicate LNA of the receiver s front end. L1 can also be an inductor within BPF1. The signal is amplified by the antenna and sent into the input of the receiver s BPF1. BPF1 is a filter sometimes called a preselector, and is utilized
