Introduction to Plesiochronous Digital Networks The term Plesiochronous Digital Hierarchy or PDH refers to a multiplexing system that is not fully synchronous. Plesiochronous, according to the ITU-T recommendations, means nominally at the same bit rate but not synchronized to a common master clock. The variation from nominal bit rate allowed in a plesiochronous telecom system is typically between 15 and 50 parts per million (ppm) offset from the specified clock frequency. PDH multiplexing and transmission systems comprised the first generation of digital telecommunications network technology, developed in the 1960s and 1970s. PDH has now been superseded by the synchronous SDH and SONET hierarchy developed in the late 1980s. A great deal of PDH equipment exists in the world s telecommunications networks, however, and the new synchronous system is also designed to interwork with it. Testing PDH networks thus will continue to be an important issue for many years to come. The digital telecommunications network had its origins with the development of pulse code modulation (PCM), invented by Reeves in 1937 and patented in 1939. As described in 3, PCM involves sampling, quantizing, and coding the analog telephone voice signal to produce a compressed binary digital signal. When Reeves invented PCM, the traffic on the telecommunications network was almost entirely voice telephony, apart from a very small amount of Telex and telegraph. The practical application of PCM had to wait, however, until the development of solid-state technology in the 1950s and 1960s. Provisioned QoS parameter set This parameter set defines the QoS parameters of the service flow as provisioned to provide the service. The provisioned parameters may be based on a SLA between a customer and a service provider. However, it only defines what has been agreed upon for the service and does not mean that such a service has been admitted or corresponding resources have been reserved. For example, a network may be provisioned for a voice service, but the resources are not reserved until the call has been set up. A service flow that has this parameter defined but the other two QoS parameters set to null is called a provisioned service flow. Admitted QoS Parameter Set This set defines the parameter sets for which resources have been allocated and reserved. This also means that the service has been admitted and can make use of the resources allocated to it at any time. It does not necessarily mean that the resources are actually being used to serve the service flow. If a flow is not using all the resources reserved for it, the network may temporarily reallocate the excess resources to other flows whose resource utilization may be exceeding what is reserved for them. However, as long as a service flow is using all its reserved resources, a network would not reallocate those resources to serve the excess needs of other service flows. A service flow that has this parameter defined but has its Active QoS Parameter set to null is called an admitted service flow. Active QoS Parameter Set This parameter set defines the parameter set for which resources are reserved and actually being used. Only flows that have active QoS parameters defined can request and be granted bandwidth for transmission. A service flow for which this parameter is defined is called an active service flow.
