The appliances have limited support for SNMP. Currently only versions 1 and 2 of SNMP are supported. Because these versions of SNMP have security issues, the management information bases (MIBs) supported by Cisco only allow read access, where access is not allowed to configure information on the appliance only to statistical information. For example, some of the statistics you can pull from an appliance include the failover status, memory and CPU usage, changes in an interface status, the number of entries in the xlate and conn tables, and other similar types of information. Normally SNMP on the appliance is used as an alternative or a complement to using syslog, where SNMP traps are used to send log information to an SNMP management station. Configuring SNMP support involves the following commands:

With inbound ACLs, the IOS compares the packet to the interface ACL before the IOS forwards it to another interface. With outbound ACLs, the packet is received on an interface and forwarded to the exit interface; the IOS then compares the packet to the ACL. One restriction that ACLs have is that they cannot filter traffic that the router itself originates. For example, if you execute a ping or traceroute from the router, or if you telnet from the router to another device, ACLs applied to the router s interfaces cannot filter these connections outbound. However, if an external device tries to ping, traceroute, or telnet to the router or through the router to a remote destination, the router can filter these packets.

A projection model is not a crystal ball, and its output does not dictate what the future will be. It is merely a tool to estimate what a company s future financial condition might be, given certain assumptions about its performance. Conversely, it is a tool to test what needs to happen in order for a particular performance goal to be reached. It is easy, for example, for a chief financial officer to say, We will have enough cash flow in the next five years to retire $100 million of our debt. This may well be true, but the validity in such a statement lies in what needs to happen. If the statement is based on conservative forecasts consistent with the company s recent performance and its current position and reputation in its industry, then this is good and fine. If, on the other hand, the $100 million is attainable only through rapid, unrealistic, and unprecedented increases in revenues, then it is very likely that the CFO s statement is just so much hot air.

be no-nonsense or rational. Informal communications tend to be friendly or urgent. Use the following as a guide as you begin the writing process: To sound no-nonsense, use the imperative, i.e., begin sentences with verbs. When you begin sentences with verbs, you encourage action. For example, Attend the meeting, Fill out the form, or Return the phone call. To sound rational, use a logical progression. For instance, First you turn on the computer, then you insert the CD into drive D, then you . . . To sound friendly, create empathy with words and phrases that suggest a speci c mood or atmosphere likely to strike a chord with your reader. For example, instead of ABC Bank is pleased to announce that it will sponsor a jazz concert every Friday at seven throughout the summer, say Picture yourself relaxing at the evening jazz concerts sponsored by ABC Bank every Friday at seven throughout the summer. Also, use a conversational tone, as if you were there in person. For instance, instead of Per our agreement . . . , say As we agreed . . . To sound urgent, stress deadlines or consequences. For example, instead of Please return the form at your earliest convenience, say Please return the form by Tuesday, August 21.
