There are other cases where the RPR provides no benefit or may be inappropriate or impossible to implement. A primary one is when the physical topology of the fiber does not allow for the creation of a ring. RPR must operate in a ring configuration. If the fiber topology is a mesh or tree configuration than creation of an RPR will be impossible. Another case where IEEE 802.17 is not required is one where the point-to-point link between switches or routers has approximately twice the peak required bandwidth as required by the applications or customers. In this case the QoS is provided by over provisioning the link obviating the need for the rigorous QoS provided by RPR. Likewise, if there are two fiber access routes (dual homing) to buildings that require communication services, the restoration properties of RPR are redundant.

CHAPTER 10:
X.25 is an early packet network technology used for long-distance data communications, typically between business locations. It usually connects slow-speed serial communications devices such as terminals. At each location, an X.25 PAD (packet assembler-disassembler) device connects local devices to the X.25 network. The PAD would be configured to send outgoing packets to specific destinations over the X.25 network. X.25 contained no authentication or encryption, and has been largely replaced by the newer Frame Relay and MPLS technologies discussed earlier in this section.

nal level at the low-frequency end of the spectrum has to be corrected by the internal equalizer network at the ampli er input section. Such equalizers come in a variety of values and are plug-in, so the correct value can be selected for the speci c cable section. Present-day ampli ers still have selectable pads and equalizers to adjust the input signal level for each ampli er station. The standard procedure is to measure the ampli er input signal level at both the low and high end (usually pilot frequencies) and then select the appropriate pad and equalizer to facilitate the setting of the output gain and slope. This technique will be treated in more detail later in the book. This procedure is known as ampli er or system balancing and is extremely important for the ampli er cascade to perform with optimum
