Although the initial long-haul fiber systems were based on the use of multimode fiber and LEDs, the demand for higher operating rates resulted in a trend toward the use of single-mode fiber and lasers. As previously noted in this book, LEDs have a maximum data transmission capability near 300 Mbits/s, which is significantly below the capability of lasers. The use of single-mode fiber and lasers resulted in a significant increase in the transmission capacity of optical systems. Today data transmission rates of 10 Gbits/s, are commonly employed in the backbone infrastructure of many long-distance communications carriers, and 40-Gbit/s systems are being used in field trials and may be in commercial service by the time you read this book.

Here, the method returns if it is done or if an error occurs. Be careful, however, because having too many exit points in a method can destructure your code, so avoid using them casually. To review: A void method can return in one of two ways: its closing curly brace is reached, or a return statement is executed.

There are ve principal classes of telephone system of ces with the LEX of ce or end- user of ce. Long-distance telephone service can involve all ve of the of ce classes interconnected by preferred and alternate routing. The hierarchy of a call between two parties using all classes of of ces is shown in Figure 5-18. The classes of of ces are supervisory in nature and have control over certain areas. The Class 1 or regional of ce is the highest class, and there are only 10 or 12 in the United States and two in Canada. There are more of the lower class of ces with the Class 4 of ce at the local level. The Class 5 of ce has the greatest number of of ces. 5.313 The telephone network in this country has contributed to the success of many companies using the services. The network has grown from many small regional exchange of ces into a huge network providing wired

If you re intent on grabbing a photo of someone who s equally intent on not being photographed, your biggest problem is the time it takes you to focus the camera once you ve got your victim in the viewfinder. So do this: Focus manually or automatically on some object that is about the same distance from you as your real target. And then without changing the focus or using the focus lock if you re using autofocus, swivel to aim at your real subject and take your shot.

view and choosing a color from the palette displayed. You do not need to blend from four colors: you can choose the same color from two or more of the flyout palettes to hone in on a range of colors, making your decisions easier. Each time a selector is changed, the color field changes, as do the available colors from which to choose.

The second technique for increasing the storage capacity is to add additional layers up to 4 layers total, two on each side of the disc. The laser beam focus is adjusted as necessary to access data on individual levels. Improved optics are required to achieve accurate data reading, as well as a reduction in the wavelength of the laser beam re ected off the disc surface. The single-sided, single-layer DVD consists of two 0.6 millimeter polycarbonate substrates that are bonded together to form a disc that is 1.2 millimeters thick. The stamped surface of a single-layer disc is coated with a layer of aluminum through a process called sputtering. This aluminum forms the re ective surface upon which the laser beam is used to detect the data pattern. This type of disc has a capacity of 4.7 Gigabytes and is referred to as a DVD-5 disc (as shown in Figure 2 - 7). Two methods are typical used to bond the two substrates together: Hot-melt method: A thin coat of melted adhesive is spread over each substrate and then the two surfaces are bonded by means of a hydraulic ram. This is the least expensive method of bonding. UV method: A thin layer of lacquer is distributed over the disc surface to be bonded, either by rotating the disc or through silkscreening. Ultraviolet light is then applied to harden the lacquer.
