the Nyquist Theorem, and each sample is represented with 8 bits. This leads to a bandwidth requirement of 64 Kbps in each direction for a standard telephone call. This voice-coding scheme is standardized in International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Recommendation G.711. Although G.711 is the standard for traditional telephony, many other coding schemes are available. These use more sophisticated coding algorithms, which enable speech to be transmitted at a range of different speeds, such as 32, 16, 8, 6.3, or 5.3 Kbps. Furthermore, some of these coding techniques utilize silence suppression such that traffic is passed over the network only when something is being said. Given that most conversations involve one person listening and one person talking at a given time, the bandwidth saved by not transmitting silence can be significant. Various speech-coding schemes are discussed in detail in 3, Speech-Coding Techniques, and all of those described can be used in VoIP systems. Therefore, VoIP can offer significant advantages over circuit-switched telephony from a bandwidth-efficiency point of view. It should be noted, however, that the availability of these coding schemes is not something unique to VoIP. Strictly speaking, these various coders could also be deployed in traditional telephony networks. However, they are not generally implemented in circuit-switched networks, as it would require an enormous investment to do so. Currently, it is possible to place a call from any telephone to any other telephone in the world. To take advantage of more advanced coding schemes would require that these coding techniques be implemented in practically every telephone switch in the world. Alternatively, it would be necessary that existing networks support the capability for the two ends of a conversation to negotiate the coding scheme to use. At the bare minimum, it would require that calls be routed from the origination to the destination based on the coding choice of the originator so that, if different coders are used at either end, the call could be passed though some interworking device. None of these capabilities are supported in traditional telephony networks. As a result, traditional telephony uses G.711 and is unlikely ever to change. On the other hand, VoIP solutions are far more recent than traditional telephony. They generally support more efficient coding schemes than G.711 and the standards written for VoIP allow for the two ends of a call to negotiate which coding scheme to use. Thus, VoIP is in a position to significantly reduce bandwidth requirements to as little as one-eighth of that used in the circuit-switched world. Given that transmission capacity can account for a large percentage of a carrier s initial investment and a very large portion of a carrier s operational costs, such bandwidth savings can mean a big difference to the bottom line.
