Key features of this service are: variable packet length; inband signaling (call setup, control, and release packets are sent in the same channel and virtual circuit as the data packets); and inclusion of flow- and error-control mechanisms at both layer 2 and layer 3. Each node checks, acknowledges, and, if necessary, requests retransmission of errored packets.

The use of excess capacities in a Frame Relay network also brings newer ideas to the forefront. By allowing the end user to use extra capacity, the bottleneck of the older networks goes away. This chapter focused on how PDUs are transmitted across an Ethernet-based network using TCP/IP. It provided a quick review of the devices that function at the physical, data link, and network layers hubs, NICs and switches, and routers, respectively as well as MAC addressing and TCP/IP addressing. The remainder of the chapter detailed how a device acquires its IP addressing information via DHCP, how names are resolved to IP addresses using DNS, and how a telnet is established and torn down with TCP. All this information was covered in s 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, and 9; however, pulling all of this information together in a detailed example helps you understand the complete process as to how the network components interact with each other and how the PDUs are created for each of the segments across which data is transmitted.
