Printing directly on a disc results in an attractive label that can be customized for each disc if desired. Issues that should be considered include cost of printing equipment; cost of printable media versus prelabeled or paper-labeled media; availability of software and trained operators to generate label artwork; and questions of how the printing process might affect disc data life expectancy. Note: For discs that are being prepared for archival storage, ISO 189251999, the international standard for Disc Storage, recommends that no label at all be printed or af xed to the disc surface. This ensures that adhesives or solvents in the ink will not negatively affect the data during long periods of storage. Of course, this standard is written primarily for archivists, so if your discs are intended for more temporary purposes (up to 5 or 10 years usefulness), it is not necessary to follow it strictly. makes p1 point to the ninth element of p1 s base type, beyond the one to which it is currently pointing. While you cannot add pointers, you can subtract one pointer from another (provided they are both of the same base type). The remainder will be the number of elements of the base type that separate the two pointers. Other than addition and subtraction of a pointer and an integer, or the subtraction of two pointers, no other arithmetic operations can be performed on pointers. For example, you cannot add or subtract float or double values to or from pointers. To see the effects of pointer arithmetic, execute the next short program. It prints the actual physical addresses to which an integer pointer (i) and a floating-point pointer (f) are pointing. Observe how each changes, relative to its base type, each time the loop is repeated. (For most 32-bit compilers, i will increase by 4s and f will increase by 8s.) Notice that when using a pointer in a cout statement, its address is automatically displayed in the addressing format applicable to the current processor and environment.

Although one project manager should have overall authority, it is often a good idea to appoint a team to assist with the project implementation plan. An IT manager and business manager are two key roles to help resolve problems and keep the project on track. Someone from procurement should be on the team along with experts in the various technologies that will be utilized. The executive sponsor should at least be associated with the team in order to lend their authority. It is important to include employees who are involved in the areas of the company that will be affected by the project. This provides two benefits: First, the team benefits from their expertise in the area in question. Second, the employees get to be involved in the change, and the hope is that they will be less resistant to it.

a problem, since the bit value must be a power of 2 and start on a power-of-2 network boundary. With a 25-bit mask, there are only two network numbers: 192.168.1.0/25 and 192.168.1.128/25. The address 192.168.1.64/26 falls under the first network number, and the 192.168.1.128/26 falls under the second one so even though the two networks are contiguous, they can t be summarized with a 25-bit mask (255.255.255.128). You could use a 24-bit mask (255.255.255.0); however, this includes a total of 256 addresses, not just the 128 addresses in question. You should summarize only for addresses that are connected to or behind your router. Otherwise, you could be propagating bad routing information routes in another part of your network that your router is not connected to. In the just-mentioned example, if 192.168.1.0/26 and 192.168.1.192/26 were also behind your router, you could then summarize all four of these as 192.168.1.0/24. All of this can be very confusing for someone just introduced to subnetting and summarization. Summarization is nothing more than listing all the routes and choosing the highest order bits that match to advertise, making sure to exclude those outside your coverage. Summarization usually gets difficult only when you have a poor addressing design in the first place like the examples you might see on the CCNA exam. In a nutshell, remember that you can create a summary route when the total number of addresses is a power of 2. If it is not a power of 2, you ll have to divide the addresses into smaller groups and summarize them separately. For the purposes of the CCNA exam, simply do the following: 1. Write all possible subnet IDs from the existing diagram, including those outside the router s coverage. 2. Pick the highest order bits that match for only the routes you re summarizing. You will easily see in your bit chart which ones overlap (like that in Table 8-1). 3. Create as many summary routes as you can. 4. Advertise the single (leftover) routes separately.
