You can use many commands on the router to set up your IP addressing information. One of the most common is to assign an IP address to an interface; however, many more commands, including the setup of DNS, restricting directed broadcasts, and others, can be used. The following sections cover some of these configurations. Unlike layer 2 switches (such as the 2960), which need only a single IP address for remote management, routers need a unique IP address on each interface that will route IP traffic. Actually, each interface on a router is a separate network or subnet, and therefore you need to plan your IP addressing appropriately and assign a network number to each router segment and then take an unused host address from the segment and configure it on the interface of the router. This address then becomes the default gateway for devices connected to that interface. IP addressing and its components are discussed in 7. Let s look at a couple of examples of incorrectly and correctly assigning IP addresses to a router s interfaces. Figure 16-1 shows an invalid configuration example. In this example, only one network number is used: 192.168.1.0/24. Notice that each interface on the router has an address from this same network number. Actually, if you would try to configure this addressing scheme on a router, you would get an overlapping address error and be prevented from completing the addressing configuration.

After a query has been created, it can be executed. One way this is done is by using the query in a foreach loop. Executing a query causes its results to be obtained. Thus, using a query involves two key steps. First, the form of the query is created. Second, the query is executed. Therefore, the query defines what to retrieve from a data source. Executing the query actually obtains the results. In order for a source of data to be used by LINQ, it must implement the IEnumerable interface. There are two forms of this interface: one generic, one not. In general, it is easier if the data source implements the generic version, IEnumerable<T>, where T specifies the type of data being enumerated. The rest of the chapter assumes that a data source implements IEnumerable<T>. This interface is declared in System.Collections.Generic.
