Protocol analysis is concerned with both the syntax and the semantics of the protocols. A protocol analyzer is a dedicated, special-purpose computer system that acts as a node on the network. Unlike a typical node, however, it monitors and captures all of the network traffic for analysis and testing. The term protocol analyzer was created in the early 1980s to describe a new class of products dedicated to testing serial data communication networks. These early products provided a set of features that focused on examining the communication protocols and ensuring that they conform to the standards. This class of products has evolved to include support for all types of computer and communications networks, architectures and protocols. They provide capabilities to compare data frames with the protocol standards (protocol decodes), load and stress networks with traffic generation, and monitor network performance with statistical analysis. The measurement capabilities have expanded to focus on a broad set of applications such as network troubleshooting, network performance monitoring, network planning, network security, protocol conformance testing, and network equipment development. These new applications go far beyond simply examining network traffic with protocol decodes. Protocol analysis consists of specific tasks a user performs in order to troubleshoot network problems or monitor network performance. The user invokes specific measurements such as protocol decodes or protocol statistics in order to perform these tasks. For example, performance monitoring requires gathering statistical measurements such as network utilization, error activity, network layer utilization, and key node activity. To gather statistics on a particular node or set of nodes, it is necessary to set up filters based on specific network addresses. Since the human brain is excellent at multitasking and performing tasks by gathering different pieces of information and assimilating them into a problem solution, protocol analysis is implemented by simultaneously executing various measurements and presenting the results to the user. The people who design, implement, and maintain large computer networks are constantly faced with network failures, performance bottlenecks, configuration problems, and network downtime. Network managers use a variety of tools and methodologies

The conveniences of Blu-ray video, which in the home are enjoyable but not essential, are translated in the office into efficiency and effectiveness. Blu-ray also brings computers into the picture. Unlike in the home, where some may question the value of being able to play a movie on a computer, the usefulness of computers in the office doing double duty as video players is clearly apparent. The natural inclination when developing material for computers is to take advantage of the additional features, such as keyboard entry, graphic interactivity, and so on, but in many cases this is counterproductive and inefficient. Simpler may be better. There are certain advantages to Blu-ray based multimedia compared to traditional computer multimedia, especially the more straightforward HDMV format j Easier development at a lower cost. For simple titles there are fewer programming and design requirements. Creating a set of menu screens and related video can be done with low-end, low-cost Blu-ray authoring packages. j Easier for the customer. The limited interface is simple to learn and is usually accessible using a remote control. Hooking a player to a TV is much simpler than getting a multimedia computer to work. j Familiar interface. Menus and remote controls are similar. j Larger audience and no cross-platform complications. Blu-ray-equipped computers, Blu-ray players, and even video game consoles can all play standard Bluray Discs. Certain kinds of programs lend themselves better to Blu-ray video, including programs with large amounts of video, programs intended for users who may not be comfortable with computers, programs with still pictures accompanied by extensive audio, and so on. Here are a few examples of material well-suited for Blu-ray video j Employee orientation and sensitivity training j Press kits, corporate reports, or newsletters j Emergency response training or information systems j Product demonstrations and catalogs j Information kiosks - product/service searches, traveler s aid, and way-finding j Product training j Sales and marketing tools j Educational learning kits j Video tours or video brochures j Collections of conferences and lectures for churches and associations j Video billboards j Video greeting/holiday cards j Testing, including licenses and professional certification j Video portfolios (ads, promo spots, and demo reels) j Trade show demo discs

Getting Started
NetApp and Cisco are teaming up to provide customers with unified, dynamic datacenter solutions that are based on Cisco s Unified Computing System and NetApp Unified Storage Architecture. Cisco and NetApp are working together to certify the combined solution, and the companies will also collaborate on customer support and marketing activities. The Cisco Unified Computing System unites compute, network, storage access, and virtualization resources in a cohesive new datacenter architecture. This allows customers to reduce the complexities often associated with datacenter virtualization, lower costs, and improve asset utilization. Through Cisco Validated Design, NetApp will provide flexible and powerful storage solutions for the Cisco Unified Computing System that will be tested for interoperability in virtualized datacenter environments. Customers benefit from the unified storage model across the entire NetApp product portfolio, application integration technologies such as the NetApp SnapManager product suite, and advanced storage efficiency features. As a result, customers can take advantage of NetApp s unique advanced storage efficiency capabilities to drive down raw storage requirements, lower costs, improve utilization in virtualized environments, and simplify administrative tasks. Additionally, NetApp s leadership in Ethernet storage technology complements the Cisco Unified Computing System, which is based on a 10GB per second Unified Fabric that supports Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE). Cisco and NetApp also plan to collaborate on joint marketing efforts, such as the multicity Virtualized Dynamic Data Center Roadshow with VMware and other select solution integration partners. NetApp will also participate in Cisco s Data Center of the Future program. Both of these programs will focus on educating customers about NetApp and Cisco datacenter offerings. As more and more customers move to a virtualized infrastructure, they require the necessary storage, compute, and network solutions needed to transition to a truly dynamic data center, said Tom Georgens, president and chief operating officer for NetApp. Through our long-standing collaboration with Cisco, we are enabling customers to tap deep into the power of their virtualized environment through a unified and scalable platform for a more efficient and streamlined experience. In March 2009, Cisco announced that NetApp is a participant in Cisco s open ecosystem of partners for the Unified Computing System, which is focused on stimulating innovation, enhancing service delivery, and accelerating the market adoption of Unified Computing. In addition, Cisco and NetApp have a long history of collaboration and many common customers that have deployed Cisco and NetApp technologies and solutions in their datacenters. NetApp supports and resells the Cisco Nexus 5000 and MDS datacenter switching products, and in 2008, Cisco and NetApp announced support for the industry s first native FCoE storage array. The two companies have also worked together on an Ethernet Unification Center of Excellence, located at NetApp s campus in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, which was announced in February 2009. The center features Ethernet-based protocols running on a Cisco 10 Gigabit Ethernet backbone.
