Second, SS7 involves a number of network elements that deal only with signaling itself and that are tied together in a network of their own. Consequently, when we think about SS7 in the context of interworking between circuit-switched networks and VoIP networks, we should think in terms of three interworking networks, as shown in Figure 7-3. The VoIP system and the circuit-switched network pass signaling via the SS7 network and pass media directly to and from one another. Figure 7-4 depicts a typical SS7 network arrangement. The two switches shown do not communicate signaling to each other via direct paths. Instead, the signaling is carried via one or more STPs, typically arranged in a quad. This configuration serves several purposes. To start, it avoids the need for direct signaling links between all endpoints (such as switches), meaning that a fully meshed signaling network is not required. Instead, a separate, more compact signaling network can be created. Second, the quad arrangement ensures great robustness. Each switch will be connected to two STPs, and multiple paths exist between the different STPs. Thus, the failure of a single link will never result in a complete loss of signaling capability between different endpoints. In fact, SS7 networks in general are extremely robust. The design of SS7 is such that very reliable signaling networks can be built, and the complete failure of a node or of a number of signaling links does not mean catastrophe for the network. As far as the applications are concerned, once information is sent to the SS7 stack, it is as good as delivered to the ultimate destination. SS7 really is that reliable and that fast.
