The chemistry laboratory is a place to experiment and learn. You must assume responsibility for your own personal safety and that of people working near you. Accidents are usually caused by carelessness, but you can help prevent them by closely following the instructions printed in this manual and those given to you by your teacher. The following are some safety rules to help guide you in protecting yourself and others from injury in a laboratory.

Resource limits are defined in a resource class. All contexts get their resource restriction from a default class called default, by default. You can override this behavior by creating a resource class and associating it to a specific context. This is accomplished with the following configuration:

photos to your computer as simple as reading any other file off a CD. The drive does add to the bulk and weight of the cameras, but they re worth checking out. If you get a camera with flash memory, you ll have to have some way to transfer the images from the memory cards to your computer. Some cameras offer a card reader that connects to your computer. You slip in a memory card, and the computer sucks out the photos. Others systems connect to the flash memory while the card is in the camera. Either way, you have to have some sort of cable to connect to your PC. Although you re unlikely to encounter them except at some closeout sale, avoid systems that use serial or parallel cables. (The newest fad is cameras that hook directly to a printer to eliminate the computer middleman. To me, this negates a main reason for getting into digital photography so you can improve your shots with touch-up software.) For Windows PCs, a USB connection is the simplest and fastest way to transfer photos. If you have a Macintosh, you may have a choice of USB or firewire connections. Both are fast, and not worth the time some fanatics spend debating their virtues.

Run-time type information may be new to you, because it is not found in non-polymorphic languages, such as C. In non-polymorphic languages there is no need for run-time type information because the type of each object is known at compile time (i.e., when the program is written). However, in polymorphic languages such as C++, there can be situations in which the type of an object is unknown at compile time, because the precise nature of that object is not determined until the program is executed. As you know, C++ implements polymorphism through the use of class hierarchies, virtual functions, and base class pointers. A base class pointer may be used to point to objects of the base class or any object derived from that base. Thus, it is not always possible to know in advance what type of object will be pointed to by a base pointer at any given moment in time. This determination must be made at run time, by using run-time type identification. To obtain an object s type, use typeid. You must include the header <typeinfo> in order to use typeid. The most commonly used form of typeid is shown here: typeid(object)
