Jitter from Electronic Components There are two main mechanisms in electronic components that introduce jitter into timing signals in digital equipment. The first is random electrical noise originating from contact and surface irregularities in components. It is sometimes called flicker or 1/f noise because it tends to increase at very low frequencies. This results in intrinsic phase noise on the signal output from oscillators. The second mechanism is the phase noise in logic circuits resulting from transition uncertainties. This is illustrated in Figure 23.6. Although these sources are measurable, they are of low amplitude compared to the other sources we will consider. A typical amplitude for this type of jitter is less than 0.01 UI peak.

In a similar fashion, the linker also tells File One where the function display( ) is located so that it can be called. When the compiler generates the object code for File Two, it substitutes a placeholder for the address of count because it has no way of knowing where count will be located in memory. The same sort of thing occurs when File One is compiled. The address of display( ) is not known, so a placeholder is used. This process forms the basis for relocatable code. When the files are joined by the linker, the placeholders are replaced with relative addresses. To better understand relocatable code, you must first understand absolute code. Although it is seldom used today, in the early days of computers, it was not uncommon for a program to be compiled to run at a specific memory location. When compiled in this way, all addresses are fixed at compile time. Because the addresses are fixed, the program can only be loaded into and executed in exactly one region of memory: the one for which it was compiled. Relocatable code, on the other hand, is compiled in such a way that the address information is not fixed. When making a relocatable object file, the linker assigns each call, jump, or global variable an offset. When the file is loaded into memory for execution, the loader automatically resolves the offsets into addresses that will work for the location in memory into which the program is being loaded. This means that a relocatable program can be loaded into and run from many different memory locations.

SortedSet<T> is a new collection added to the .NET Framework by version 4.0. It supports a collection that implements a sorted set. SortedSet<T> implements the ISet<T>, ICollection, ICollection<T>, IEnumerable, IEnumerable<T>, ISerializable, and IDeserializationCallback interfaces. SortedSet<T> implements a set in which all elements are unique. In other words, duplicates are not allowed. SortedSet<T> implements the full complement of set operations defined by ISet<T>, such as intersection, union, and symmetric difference. Because SortedSet<T> maintains its elements in sorted order, it is the collection of choice when working with sorted sets. SortedSet<T> is a dynamic collection that grows as needed to accommodate the elements it must store. Here are four commonly used constructors defined by SortedSet<T>: public SortedSet( ) public SortedSet(IEnumerable<T> collection) public SortedSet(IComparer comparer) public SortedSet(IEnumerable<T> collection, IComparer comparer) The first form creates an empty set. The second creates a set that contains the elements of the collection specified by collection. The third lets you specify the comparer. There is also a fifth constructor that lets you initialize a set from serialized data. Because SortedSet<T> implements ISet<T>, it provides a compete assortment of set operations. Other set-related methods provided by SortedSet<T> include GetViewBetween( ), which returns a portion of a set in the form of a SortedSet<T>, RemoveWhere( ), which removes elements from a set that satisfy a specified predicate, and Reverse( ), which returns an IEnumerable<T> that cycles through the set in reverse order. To enable the use of the && and || short-circuit operators, you must follow four rules. First, the class must overload & and |. Second, the return type of the overloaded & and | methods must be the same as the class for which the operators are being overloaded. Third, each parameter must be a reference to an object of the class for which the operator is being overloaded. Fourth, the true and false operators must be overloaded for the class. When these conditions have been met, the short-circuit operators automatically become available for use. The following program shows how to properly implement the & and | for the ThreeD class so that the short-circuit operators && and || are available.
