Web Intelligence does a virtual join of result sets by common dimensions automatically when you have one data provider; the multiple SQL statements are issued because you have multiple fact tables within the same universe. You can, however, also have multiple queries within a document that come from different universes or that come from the same universe but with different filter criteria. The ability to synchronize these multiple data providers is a key feature new to XI Release 2. However, if you are used to authoring such complex reports in the full client, it s important to understand that the behavior is slightly different in Web Intelligence. With earlier versions of BusinessObjects, joining of multiple data providers happens automatically across universes as long as the object names are the same. With Web Intelligence and Desktop Intelligence, when the dimension object names are the same and come from the same universe, they are automatically merged. When they come from different universes, you must explicitly map them to one another, in a process called merging. Missing rows between the queries is treated differently; Desktop Intelligence will do a full outer join automatically so that all rows from each query result are displayed in the merged table. In Web Intelligence, the outer join is performed in only one direction unless you set the Document Properties to Extend Merged Dimension Values. As an example, within the eFashion universe, Sales is one star schema and Promotions is in a second star schema. They both share common dimensions such as Time and Articles. However, let s assume they are in two separate universes; you can no longer build one query or one data provider to create the report shown in Figure 23-1. You need to create a query for each universe. In Web Intelligence, you must define how the dimensions in each query map to one another. In Desktop Intelligence, you need to do this only when the dimension names are different. In the following example, I have purposely used different object names to make the different data sources clearer. However, ideally, your universe designer will ensure that common dimension names follow the same naming conventions across multiple universes. Ideally, the designer may link universes to ensure such conformity. To link these multiple data providers, do the following: 1. Create a query from the first universe. 2. To insert a second data provider, from within the Web Intelligence query panel, select Add Query. 3. When prompted, select the universe to use as the data source and click OK. 4. Web Intelligence will display a blank query panel. Note at the bottom of your screen that there are now two queries.
