There is a need to update the growing volume of knowledge of this important and practical subject. Existing books seldom include rehabilitation aspects exposed to the dynamic forces at work and may not fully appreciate the need for teamwork or sensitivity to client s and the user s needs. More important is speaking the engineer s language and taking a series of small steps rather than making one big leap. Also, recommending one or more outdated books to the students does not seem to solve the problem. There are relatively few books on similar topics and on developments in modern technology on design and construction disciplines. However, the available books seem to contain information from a different era, information which is already obsolete and has becomes less relevant than the conditions for which it was originally written. Maintenance of highways include the much neglected highway structures, such as cantilever and overhead sign structures, special loads resulting from variable message signs, noise walls, precast modular retaining walls, and providing relief bridges and scour countermeasures at bridges and embankments. For bridges located on waterways, use of deeper foundations and adequate bridge openings are being recommended. An earlier handbook on protection against ood scour (a major cause of bridge failures in the United States), which I coauthored for NJDOT jointly with City University of New York, has now been approved by FHWA for use by consultants. I had also developed Sections 45 and 46 of NJDOT Bridge Design Manual pertaining to seismic design and bridge scour. I nd that it is the right time to rewrite the contents of the subject and address the latest changes in the code requirements (such as important changes in the format of SI&A Datasheet and that the method of rating needs to be based on the new LRFR Method). The latter method has generated development of new LRFD software, such as LEAP, SAM, Merlin-Dash, PENNDOT and other LRFD based software for seismic and scour analysis. Also, a book should fully present the language of ongoing design, construction culture, and design development phases.

In order to route traffic through a network, it is necessary to send messages to the switches so that the right connections are made (such as for establishing a virtual path). These messages are called signaling. In an ordinary telephone call, signaling originates from the handset. Signaling examples include connection establishment, ringing, dial tones, busy signals, and connection termination. Early technology uses dial pulses created by interrupting the dc supply for the exchange. This process has its origins in the actuation of step-by-step uniselector switches in the electromechanical exchanges. While a modern digital exchange can still accept this type of signaling, the preferred method is now dual-tone multifrequency signaling (DTMF). This is faster and can be used while the call is in progress, for example to control a voice-messaging system. Generally, DTMF dialling would also be used by customer premises equipment such as computers, data terminals, and PBXs. High-capacity customer premises signaling may use the Common Channel Signaling capability of the ISDN D channel at basic or primary rate (see section 3.2.5). Once the call has been received and processed by the local exchange, the ongoing call setup and control, including billing, is handled by the network s own internal signaling system. This can be either Channel Associated Signaling or Common Channel Signaling. Existing systems may use Channel Associated Signaling (CAS), whereby the signaling instructions are sent through the same circuit as the voice and data traffic. This mechanism is also called in-band signaling. CAS systems are limited by available rates and the fact that no signaling is possible while the call is in progress. In order to set up a KPI with multiple targets, the developer clicks on the KPI in the Workspace Browser to bring up the Summary page for the KPI. For the Actual, the name can be changed to match the filtered value. As an example, imagine that this KPI will present the product category of Bikes. The designer would change the name from Actual to Bikes and then click on Data Mappings. Then a filter would be added to filter just by bikes; this is similar to what was shown in Figure 5-14 but would not also include the State-Province filter. Next, the Target would have its data mapping changed to the target of just sales for bikes. In the Adventure Works cubes there are not sales forecasts for different product categories, so for the sake of this example a hard-coded value will be used. Again, the designer would simply click on the Data Mappings link and choose the appropriate value for the target. The name Target could be changed or left the same, depending on the needs of the business. The thresholds and indicator are set as before. Finally, the designer would click on the New Target button to add a new target to the KPI. This target, however, will map to either the actual Sales Amount or the Sales Amount Quota without any filters. Remember that this target is all sales, and Adventure Works is mostly a company built to sell bicycles, so they determine that Bikes should be at least 90% of total sales. Therefore, the actual for bikes can be compared to either the actual sales or the quota, whichever the business determines is the better approach (typically, business would use the actual sales and not the quota in this case.) The thresholds, however, are set so that the indicator should move to the On Target position at 90% or higher. For this new target, a name such as Total or Percentage of Total can be used. An indicator must be added as nothing comes up by default. Once the thresholds are set and the data is mapped, returning to the scorecard now reveals additional items in the Details pane. Figure 5-17 shows that while there is still just a single KPI of Sales Amount, there are three Metrics: Bikes, Target, and % of Total. These three metrics have been placed in the grid. The column labeled Bikes is the Sales Amount measure filtered to show data for just the bikes category (which is the majority of the data). The Target column would be the sales quota set for bikes; in this case it is merely a hard-coded value of $30 million because there is not an actual forecast for bikes in the cube. The threshold is set so that the current bike sales of approximately $22.5 million are in the red, or Off Target, position. Finally, the % of Total column represents the Sales Amount measure for all products. Bikes are a significant part of this measure, but the goal is for bikes to be 90% or higher; currently bikes represent only about 87% of total revenues, so the indicator is yellow or Slightly Off Target. Note that the % of Total column isn t actually showing the percentage, but the Sales Amount measure. If the goal was to show the actual percentage, this would be one of the times than an MDX expression would be needed. In this case, the Data
