from AT&T, the General Instrument Corporation (GI), Zenith, Thomson, Philips, Sarnoff Labs, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Its purpose is to recommend HDTV standards and methods of modulation. The FCC created the Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) to complete the work of the Grand Alliance from an of cial standpoint. The ATSC SI-issued Document A /56 outlines and addresses the issue for subscriber device and service for digital programming. Since its formation, Cable Labs in Colorado has been very active and supportive in working with ATSC. With all the work that the industry and the FCC has been doing to get HDTV and digital television up and running, many questions remain unanswered at this time. This means more work is to be done to resolve the must-carry questions, and the restrictions and controls applying to the cable television industry. In December of 1996, the FCC gave the okay for broadcasters to begin testing the new digital television transmission. This is the standard for the broadcasting industry to follow for transmitting HDTV, video, and audio services to the public. Since new television receivers will be needed to receive HDTV signals, a time frame for conversion has been set. After 2006, all television broadcasters will be required to be transmitting digitally in either HDTV or NTSC video formats. Modulation for broadcasters will be 8-VSB, while cable systems will use the quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) 16, 64, or 256 digital formats. These methods of television transmission will be discussed in 5. 1.312 From time to time, Congress has passed legislation specifying cable television regulations and will continue to do so. The cable television industry has evolved from the simple systems of the early 1950s and 1960s to a multi-billion-dollar telecommunications industry. Still, many small, simple systems that are long since debt-free continue to provide oneway multichannel service to subscribers. The normal course of events for the industry was to consolidate assets by mergers, thus forming several giant corporations. Such corporations activated the return path, expanded the signal bandwidth in the forward direction, installed ber-optic plants, and activated pay-per-view services. Some even instituted telephone and data services to become all-service telecommunication providers. The FCC has to contend with these issues as the telecommunications industry grows. The FCC issued its second report and order on December 31, 1998, that requires cable television systems to become a part of the Emergency Alert System (EAS). This order requires equipment to be installed in cable sys-

means of a TU pointer, which is the only element of TU Section overhead. The TU frame then is multiplexed into a fixed location within the VC-4. Although the TU frame structure is illustrated here residing in one VC-4, it actually is distributed over four consecutive VC-4 frames. It is therefore more accurate to refer to the structure as a TU multiframe. The phase of the multiframe is indicated by one of the nine VC-4 path overhead (H4) bytes.

The following sections deal with the CAM table and port security. This exercise will help you become more familiar with the CAM table on a 2950 switch. You ll perform this lab using Boson s NetSim simulator. You can find a picture of the network diagram for the simulator in the Introduction of this book. 1. Start up the simulator and click the Lab Navigator button. 2. Double-click Exercise 12-2 and click the Load Lab button. This will load the lab configuration based on Exercise 12-1. 3. On the 2950-1 switch, access Privilege EXEC mode and examine the CAM table. If any entries appear, clear them. 4. At the top of the simulator in the menu bar, click the eSwitches icon and choose 2950-1. 5. Enter Privilege EXEC mode by typing enable. View the CAM table by typing show mac-address-table. 6. Clear the CAM table by typing clear mac-address-table dynamic. 7. On the 2950-1, ping Host-1: type ping Examine the CAM table: show mac-address-table. What is the MAC address of Host-1 The MAC address will be different for each computer on which NetSim is installed. With what interface is it associated (should be fastethernet0/3) 8. On the 2950-1, ping Host-2: type ping Examine the CAM table: show mac-address-table. What is the MAC address of Host-2 With what interface is it associated (should be fastethernet0/4) 9. Verify the MAC address on Host-1. 10. At the top of the simulator in the menu bar, click the eStations icon and choose Host-1. Enter ipconfig /all and compare the MAC address of the PC to that learned by the 2950-1 switch on fastethernet0/3. 11. Verify the MAC address on Host-2.
Because the operating system needs to allow multiple users to run and access applications (and thus application Registry settings) simultaneously, a program must be installed in such a fashion that the Registry changes are replicated for all users. There are two basic methods for installing an application on a Citrix XenApp server to cause this replication to take place. The recommended method is to use the Control Panel and run the Add/Remove Programs application. The other is to run the change user /install and change user /execute commands from a command prompt.
