operations, high-level mathematical computations, or string handling. As a result, most programs include calls to various functions contained in C s standard library. The C language defines a standard library that provides functions that perform most commonly needed tasks. (This library is also supported by C++.) When you call a function that is not part of the program you wrote, the compiler remembers its name. Later the linker combines the code you wrote with the object code already found in the standard library. This process is called linking. The functions that are kept in the library are in relocatable format. This means that the memory addresses for the various machine-code instructions have not been absolutely defined; only offset information has been kept. When your program links with the functions in the standard library, these memory offsets are used to create the actual addresses used. There are several technical manuals and books that explain this process in more detail. However, you do not need any further explanation of the actual relocation process to program in C or use C++ Builder.

D marks the Brightness and Contrast sliders. They basically do what you d expect; they re like the controls on a television set, but as with a TV set, brightness and contrast don t always make an image better. Skip these controls for this assignment. E marks the area the professionals use to snap up a photo: Drag the Highlights slider to about 71; this brightens the brighter areas in the image without affecting the midtones or shadow areas. Now drag the Midtones slider up to about 31 to open up darker regions to provide image detail without messing up the Shadows region, which is fine as is.

Key Performance Indicators are the basis for much of the analysis done at high levels of an organization. Far from a simple graphical display, they represent the very core metrics of the business and include both a status and a trend. Useful by themselves, KPIs become even more powerful when placed on a scorecard. Scorecards can take various KPIs, group them into different perspectives, and provide scores in each perspective as well as an overall score. KPIs at a very high level may break down into lower level KPIs to provide more detailed information. Scorecards are often part of a dashboard, which is used to display anything from a single scorecard to several scorecards, reports, and other information. When designing the KPIs for an organization, the primary planning tool is the strategy map. With it, organizations document their goals and carefully describe the elements they will measure in order to ensure their company grows. Once the strategy map has been created, the organization seeks to identify the KPIs that will map to the goals identified. These KPIs are then created, scorecards are built, and the monitoring of the business begins.

measuring the transmission characteristics of analog voice frequency circuits (Figure 25.6). These instruments meet all or part of the requirements defined in IEEE Standard 743-1984 [4] for the North American telephone systems, and ITU-CCITT Vol. 4 Series O [6] for the European telephone systems. (Other regions of the world typically have adopted one of these two dominant standards.) IEEE 743 is being revised at this writing (1996); some measurements will be deleted and others added to support the newer digital subscriber loop requirements. Completion of this new standard will motivate instrument suppliers to make the transition from analog to digital measurement techniques. A digital implementation still will yield analog answers, so a discussion of analog measurements is still a worthwhile venture.
