To create a character-based input stream, wrap a byte stream inside a StreamReader. StreamReader defines several constructors. Frame Alignment Signal (FAS) and a 1536-bit frame; the E4 frame has a 12-bit FAS and a 2928-bit frame length. The FAS bits are the only fixed information in these higher-level PDH frame structures, so in-service testing is limited to checking for errors in these bits. If a PDH multiplexer or demultiplexer loses the input signal or frame alignment, it sends out an all-ones Alarm Indication Signal (AIS), which is picked up downstream to set network alarms.
