Splicing and connectorizing optical ber into a network is crucial to the operation of a ber-optic communication system. Since the optical ber exhibits such low loss over a distance, a system should not allow losses to accumulate from the necessary splices and connectors. Prudent designers should order suf cient optical cable for segments that require a branching or termination point. Since connectors are required at stations in the system, extra splices along the way should be avoided. The quality of splicing and of connectors should be good so that the accompanying loss is held to a minimum. A variety of connectors are available for connecting a system. But a good design dictates that the variety of connectors should be minimized. This means that personnel will not have to be trained for different connectors. Also, stocking a variety of connectors and the necessary tooling can be avoided. 4.141 One of the rst splices to be used was a mechanical splice. Essentially, the optical ber was cut, cleaned, and cleaved so the end was cut ush (perpendicular to the axis). When both ends were thusly prepared, the ends were placed in a ferrule (tubing) made of either metal alloy or plastic and butted together end to end. Improvements in such types of splices included the addition of an index-matching gel to help mate the cleaned ends and a cement to prevent the ber end from pulling. Another big improvement in mechanical splices was what became known as the elastomeric splice. This type of splice used a plastic holder that held the splice open with a tool. The cleaved and cleaned ends of the bers entered from opposite ends of the plastic splice piece, where they met at a junction point containing an index-matching gel. When the tool was withdrawn, the bers in the grooved track clamped closed, holding the bers at the junction. Properly made elastomeric splices often yield splice loss less than 1 dB. The splicing of optical ber was always considered to be permanent even if such splices of the elastomeric type could be opened and the bers disconnected. 4.142 The method of choice for splicing optical bers for both multimode and single mode is called fusion splicing. This method essentially melts and fuses the glass bers together. The equipment needed to fusion splice optical bers is a sophisticated and relatively expensive device requiring

decisions or generic questions, few of their people can even talk about the services. How sad, they will be left behind if they do not change quickly. New regulations in the U.S., in effect since the divestiture agreement, changed this demarcation point to the entrance of the customer s building. From there, the customer hooked up whatever equipment was desired. Few people remember that in early 1980, a 2400-bps modem cost $10,000. The items that customers purchase from a myriad of other sources include all the pieces we see during the convergence process. In the rest of the world today, where full divestiture or privatization has not yet taken place, the telephone companies (or PTTs) still own the equipment. Other areas of the world have a hybrid system under which customers might or might not own their equipment. The combinations of this arrangement are almost limitless, depending on the degree of privatization and deregulation. However, the one characteristic that is common in most of the world to date is that the local provider owns the wires from the outside world to the entrance of the customer s building. This local loop is now under constant attack from the wireless providers offering satellite service, local multipoint distribution services (LMDS), and multi-channel multi-point distribution services (MMDS). Moreover, the CATV companies have installed coaxial cable or fiber, if new wiring has been installed, and they offer the interconnection to business and residential consumers alike. The CLECs have also emerged as formidable foes to the local providers. They are installing fiber to many corporate clients (or buildings) with less expense and long-term write-off issues. The CLECs are literally walking away from the telephone companies and the local loop. Add the xDSL family of products to this equation and the telephone companies are running out of options. The telephone companies today have approximately 15,000 xDSL connections across the U.S., whereas the CLECs have over 200,000. Moreover, the cable TV companies have close to 800,000 cable modems installed for high-speed Internet access. This is where the CATV companies see the convergence taking place. CLECs are also seeing the convergence in the local loop, and with xDSL in their potpourri of offerings, they are actually nudging the local telephone companies aside.

For each item you list, ask yourself, Does the choice I am making about this situation really serve my higher potential and greater good in life If the answer is no, remove it from your list. If the answer is yes, set in motion a plan of action to focus on and complete the project. Next, assign a date by which you will do this and a separate date for its targeted completion.

EA was established as a publisher in 1982 by its charismatic founder, William Trip Hawkins. It sought out excellent game developers, signed contracts with them, and produced some truly groundbreaking early games: Archon, Pinball Construction Set, Dr. J and Larry Bird Go One-on-One, and others. Trip s motto was simple, hot, and deep : games should be easy to learn to play (simple), exciting (hot), and provide rich, long-lasting gameplay, with new things to see and learn (deep). Before long, however, EA began to hire developers to work in-house. They set up programming, art, and music departments and staffed them with some of the best people they could find. Sometimes they bought small development companies outright. They didn t stop doing contracts with external developers, however; they adopted a mixed approach, often doing their most valuable projects in-house where they could keep a close eye on them. In the late 80s, Electronic Arts decided to capitalize on the strength of their sales force and enter the distribution business as well. If they were so good at selling their own games, why not sell other publishers as well, in exchange for a cut of the revenue They signed distribution deals with Lucasfilm Games (now LucasArts Entertainment), Strategic Simulations Inc., and a variety of other small publishers. So they actually occupied three different parts of the chain: development, publication, and distribution. The two areas that EA hasn t gone into are retail sales, at one end, and hardware manufacturing at the other. They don t own software stores, and they never tried to build a game console of their own. Nor have they ever signed a deal to produce games exclusively for one machine. This way they re not dependent on a hardware manufacturer; if a console flops, as the Sega Saturn did, they can simply stop supporting it and carry on building games for its competitor. EA has had its failures on occasion. They established a children s software group, EA*Kids, that was poorly managed and had to be shut down. They tried to get into the arcade game business, spent several million dollars, and got out again after their development efforts bogged down. They also backed Trip Hawkins new company 3DO, which made a machine called the 3DO Multiplayer that turned out to be an over-hyped, overpriced failure. But EA has never bet so much money on one of these projects that it really hurt the company when it failed; and, in fact, by selling their 3DO stock at a judicious moment, they actually made money on the deal. In recent years, EA has taken to buying up other publishers Origin, Maxis, and Kesmai to name just a few and then adding those companies products to their own lineup. They ve also gotten some great licensing deals, making games with the Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, and James Bond brands. EA still doesn t have the money and power of a console manufacturer like Nintendo, but they are the largest independent publisher in America.
