The development in electronics always seems to be a source of amazement. Early amplifying devices were the vacuum tube that consumed much more power than the present-day solid-state devices. The development of the transistor and its use as an amplifying device was welcomed in the cable ampli er arena. The transistorized ampli ers consumed less power, developed less heat, and provided lower noise and distortion gures. It was a de nite improvement. Solid-state technology progressed rapidly from the single discrete transistor to the integrated circuit consisting of the equivalent of several transistors as well as resistors and capacitors. Such so-called chip technology resulted in integrated circuit IC ampli ers for the cable television industry. These ampli ers provided more gain and a higher output level, as well as lower noise and distortion characteristics. 1.211 One large improvement in cable television technology was the use of cable-powered ampli ers. The cable itself was used to feed power to the electronic ampli ers. Coupling networks within the ampli er housings would separate the signal from the power, thus feeding each to their respective circuits. At rst the voltage level of 30 v.a.c. was connected to the cable via a transformer with its primary joined to the 110-v.a.c. commercial power system. This 30-volt power would supply a segment of the cable system consisting of several ampli ers. Power blocks would disconnect the segment from other segments connected to other 30-volt supplies. These power blocks were bridged with signal-passing networks, thus providing signal continuity between power segments. Now, fewer connections had to be made to the commercial power system. Only at 30-volt power supply locations were connections to the commercial power system needed. This improvement now requires system designers to consider the power-distribution problem along with the signal-delivery system. Systems were always expanding and new areas added, requiring more ampli-

Merges the ordered list contained in ob with the ordered invoking list. The result is ordered. After the merge, the list contained in ob is empty. In the second form, a comparison function can be specified that determines when one element is less than another. Removes the last element in the list. Removes the first element in the list. Adds an element with the value specified by val to the end of the list. Adds an element with the value specified by val to the front of the list. Returns a reverse iterator to the end of the list. Removes elements with the value val from the list. Removes elements for which the unary predicate pr is true. Returns a reverse iterator to the start of the list. Changes the size of the list to that specified by num. If the list must be lengthened, then elements with the value specified by val are added to the end. Reverses the invoking list. Returns the number of elements currently in the list. Sorts the list. The second form sorts the list using the comparison function cmpfn to determine when one element is less than another. The contents of ob are inserted into the invoking list at the location pointed to by i. After the operation, ob is empty. The element pointed to by el is removed from the list ob and stored in the invoking list at the location pointed to by i.

The difference that a few words and phrases make in the overall tone and character of your writing cannot be overstated. Think about the words you select, avoid clich s, and use the FURY model to guide your choices. EXERCISE 14: Select Words with FURY Use the FURY principle to select powerful words as you revise Amanda s E-mail to add some pizzazz. Amanda, a human resources manager for a large steel manufacturer, needed to send an E-mail to supervisors informing them that performance appraisals were due by November 15. It s boring, she explained, and I couldn t think of how to add a little pep to such an ordinary business communication. Here s Amanda s original E-mail:

1. Bridges provide vital links for the nation s economy, defense, and quality of life. In addition to natural hazards, the transportation infrastructure in the U.S. is vulnerable to physical, biological, chemical, and radiological attacks. To keep the system safe and operational under all circumstances systems and technologies should be developed to prevent, detect, respond to, and remediate all attacks. The design of bridges for blast and impact is important. Multiple hazards affect the stability and service life of structures. 2. University of Missouri-Columbia (UMC) has a unique National Center for Explosion Resistant Design. They are engaged in research projects to establish prototypical functionality and architectural standards for blast-resistant barricade systems through applied research, design, and test efforts. 3. To begin addressing this concern, FHWA has initiated a state pooled grant program entitled Validation of Numerical Modeling and Analysis of Steel Bridge Towers Subjected to Blast Loading. The research program includes a combination of blast testing against scaled steel tower components and parallel numerical computations using a variety of analytical tools. 4. Inelastic dynamic progressive collapse analysis of truss structures: In a truss, dynamic effects may arise not only due to external dynamic loads, but also due to a sudden reduction in the stiffness and load carrying capacity of a member. Resulting dynamic redistribution of internal forces may lead to progressive collapse of the entire truss structure.

The setroute parameter causes the appliance to accept the default route from the DHCP server this is typically done when your outside interface is acquiring its addressing dynamically from the ISP. If you omit this parameter, you ll need to configure a default route on your appliance (this is discussed in 4). You can also specify the number of times the appliance should attempt to obtain its addressing.

The Path span, which allows network performance to be maintained from a service end-to-end perspective, i.e., from the point at which a tributary signal is assembled into its SPE/VC, to the point at which it is disassembled. The Line or Multiplex Section (MS) spans (in SONET and SDH, respectively), which allow network performance to be maintained between transport nodes.
