Application Details
With Supervisor, BusinessObjects administrators would use command sets to control software capability for groups of users. For example, you may have a group of Report Readers who would have the ability only to refresh reports, not to author them. These users would not even see the menu options to create a new document. An often-cited limitation, though, with BusinessObjects 6 and earlier is that these command restrictions were global when customers wanted them to be universe-specific: for example, user Sam should be able to author reports for supply chain universes but only refresh reports for finance universes. With BusinessObjects XI, you now can control permissions specific to individual documents and universes. BusinessObjects 6 and Crystal 10 also differed in how individual reports were organized. BusinessObjects used the concept of categories, allowing reports to be assigned to more than one category. Categories were strictly for organization purposes, not security. All shared documents were exported to one folder in version 6, Corporate Documents. Crystal, meanwhile, used folders and allowed subfolders; one report could belong to only one folder. Security was applied at the folder or individual report level. With BusinessObjects XI, you can use either approach or a combination of the two. Categories provide more flexibility, as items can be cross-referenced, but when you add security to the mix, there is potential for confusion. Row-level security and table mappings that are universe specific have remained relatively unchanged in XI. The main difference is that these commands are now defined within Designer and not within CMC, which has replaced most of the former Supervisor capabilities. Object-level security (Private, Controlled, Restricted, Confidential, Public) that enabled only certain users to see individual columns within a universe is managed through membership of groups. As in earlier versions of BusinessObjects, these groups are not universe specific, however. Thus, if a user has access to Private objects in, say, the HR universe, that user also will have access to Private objects in the Sales universe (assuming the same user has access to both universes). Finally, in BusinessObjects 6 and earlier, you often viewed security starting with the group or user.
