At the center of C# is object-oriented programming (OOP). The object-oriented methodology is inseparable from C#, and all C# programs are to at least some extent object oriented. Because of its importance to C#, it is useful to understand OOP s basic principles before you write even a simple C# program. OOP is a powerful way to approach the job of programming. Programming methodologies have changed dramatically since the invention of the computer, primarily to accommodate the increasing complexity of programs. For example, when computers were first invented, programming was done by toggling in the binary machine instructions using the computer s front panel. As long as programs were just a few hundred instructions long, this approach worked. As programs grew, assembly language was invented so that a programmer could deal with larger, increasingly complex programs, using symbolic representations of the machine instructions. As programs continued to grow, high-level languages such as FORTRAN and COBOL were introduced that gave the programmer more tools with which to handle complexity. When these early languages began to reach their breaking point, structured programming languages, such as C, were invented. At each milestone in the history of programming, techniques and tools were created to allow the programmer to deal with increasingly greater complexity. Each step of the way, the new approach took the best elements of the previous methods and moved forward. The same is true of object-oriented programming. Prior to OOP, many projects were nearing (or exceeding) the point where the structured approach no longer worked. A better way to handle complexity was needed, and object-oriented programming was the solution.

The last page in the Load Members Wizard is the Review and Load page. Here the developer can review the dimension and property mapping information. The Back button or the left navigation bar can be used to return to the appropriate page to change any of the selected options. Clicking the Finish button will close the wizard and load the dimension data from the selected source. The display is automatically changed to dimension workspace where the newly loaded members can be reviewed. After all the dimension members are loaded from a data source, the dimension can be saved or checked in. Checking in will automatically save the dimension data to the PPS Planning system. Load Members from CSV Files The third option for loading dimension data is to load members from a Comma Separated Value (CSV) file. Loading dimension members from a CSV file is used in situations where the modeler working with the Planning Business Modeler client tool has to load a dimension that has a large number of members that are fairly static, the dimension data is obtained from an external source like an ERP system in a flat file, and the modeler does not have the know-how or permission to load the data into one of the data source databases defined in the PPS Planning Server. The user defined Employee dimension is selected to demonstrate loading of dimension data from a CSV file in this chapter. The first step in loading dimension data from CSV file is to click the link Load Members from the Dimension Tasks pane after the Checking Out the Employee dimension. This will open the Select Member Source page in the Load Members Wizard, as shown in Figure 7-19. Select the Load members from a CSV file on this page and provide the location of the file containing the dimension member data in the Location text box. The dimension member data should be provided in a Comma Separated Value file format. The CSV file should contain columns headers in the first row and the first column header should be titled Label. This column should contain the dimension member labels, which is the primary identifier of objects throughout the system. The Name column is also required, and the column header must be titled Name exactly. If the optional description column is included in the CSV file, the column headers must be titled Description. Figure 7-21 shows a sample CSV file that is loaded to the Employee dimension for the purpose of the examples in this chapter. The last page in the Load Members Wizard is the Review and Load page.
