Figure 7.2 The PDH multiplexer/demultiplexer pyramid for the international 2 Mbps standard, showing the nomenclature used to describe the stages of multiplexing and demultiplexing. Each multiplexer in the PDH system is a standalone element with its own internal clock, and there is no requirement for synchronization. Extracting a 2 Mbps (E1) tributary from a high-capacity 140 Mbps (E4) path, however, requires three stages of demultiplexing as shown here.

DISPOSITION
If you look on the back of a wired, networked computer, you ll see a piece of Cat 5 cabling, terminated with an RG-45 connector (remember, it looks like a fat phone connector), and plugging into the computer. This cabling is plugged into a network interface card (NIC). The NIC is the interface (as the name suggests) between the computer and the network. In older computers, this card had to be purchased separately and installed, however NICs are pretty much standard equipment on computers now you have to specifically request that they not be installed on your machine if you are so inclined. There are different types of NICs that employ different communications technologies. The most popular is Ethernet.

Two Simple Changes
Straight-through unshielded twisted pair (UTP) cables are used for DTE-to-DCE connections, where a DTE is a PC or router and a DCE is a switch or hub. Crossover cables are used for DCE-to-DCE or DTEto-DTE connections. In a crossover cable, pins 1 and 3, and pins 2 and 6 are crossed. Don t be surprised if you have to match up the cabling type you need to use based on the two devices that you need to connect together. Fiber-optic cables are best used in environments that have EMI and/or RFI or for connecting components over long distances. Be familiar with the different Ethernet implementations, such as 10BaseT, 100BaseTX, and 1000BaseLX support, including the distances they can span and the kinds of connectors at the ends of their cables. GBICs are used to provide an option of interface connectors for a Gigabit Ethernet interface.
Part II:
An object database (or Object Database Management System, ODBMS) is a database where information is represented as objects that are used in object-oriented programming languages. Object-oriented databases are used for data that does not require static or pre-defined attributes, such as a fixed-length field or defined data structure. The data can even be of varying types. The data that is contained in an object-oriented database is unpredictable in nature. Unlike the clean separation between programs and data in the relational database model, object databases make database objects appear as programming language objects. Both the data and the programming method are contained in an object. Object databases are really just the mechanisms used to store data that is inherently part of the basic object-oriented programming model. Thus, when a data object is accessed, the data object itself will contain functions (methods), negating the requirement for a query language like SQL. Object databases are not widely used commercially. They are limited to a few applications requiring high-performance processing on complex data. Relational databases are starting to look a little more like object databases through the addition of object-oriented interfaces and functions; object-oriented databases are starting to look a little more like relational databases through query languages such as Object Query Language (OQL).
