Now that you know how to determine which level of editing is appropriate for your projects, it s time to discover whether you are able to identify common errors. The following quiz will help you assess your own level of knowledge about common grammar, punctuation, capitalization, and spelling issues. It s important that you acknowledge your abilities and inabilities as a writer and proofreader. Until you know what errors you don t catch, and learn strategies to nd problems and x them, you won t be able to proofread effectively. EXERCISE 19: Assess Your Knowledge The following quiz is a test of your knowledge of grammar, word usage, punctuation, capitalization, and spelling, and of your proofreading abilities. Select the best answer for each of the questions. After the quiz, you ll nd brief explanations of the correct answers. The next chapter goes into more detail and provides you with additional opportunities to practice. 1. It will provide encouragement and reinforcement as needed, and diagnostic exercises will help the student to measure his or her progress. A comprehensive exam at the end of the book will help the student to assess his mastery of the subject, and will point to areas that require further work. We expect this book to be the cornerstone of a series of elementary mathematics books of the same tenor and utility. Steven G. Krantz St. Louis, Missouri

Fours have rich, dynamic, and dramatic interior lives in which they review and revisit past occurrences as well as future desires and scenarios. Many Fours describe their interior world this way: It s as if I m watching multiple movies simultaneously, in full color and with accompanying soundtracks. Although many Fours go to great lengths to communicate their inner experiences to a variety of other people, others do so more selectively. Moreover, because what is occurring within them is both complex and constantly shifting, it can be difficult for them to express all of their inner experiences in a way that others can understand.

Most fact tables have several columns that uniquely identify one row of data. In the BEACH or Island Resorts Marketing universe, the two columns CUST_ID and INV_ID uniquely identify the records in the SALES table. The two columns together are called a composite key. Lookup or dimension tables also may have a composite key. None of the BusinessObjects XI sample universes contain lookup tables with composite keys, and recently implemented, well-designed data warehouses also should not require them. However, early data warehouses often used composite keys, and transaction systems still do. For example, to track changes in customer reference data, the month and year often may be part of the composite key. To illustrate this concept, I have modified the CUSTOMER table

Having a good disaster-recovery plan in place is small comfort to users if they are experiencing regular interruptions in service. Centralizing computing resources makes it that much more important to incorporate a high degree of resilience into a design. Companies must take a global view of the entire infrastructure and make the following assessments: Identify single points of failure. Even if the database server is clustered, what happens if the WAN connection fails Implement redundancy in critical system components. If one server is good, two are better. If possible, they should carry balanced loads or, at the very least, have an identical backup server to put online in case one fails (a cold spare ). Implement Citrix EdgeSite with alerting and escalations. Even when multiple redundant solutions are in place, it is important to have visibility to when one part of the redundancy has failed. We have seen many instances where the primary resource went down and failed over to the backup with no visibility, and when the backup eventually failed, a critical failure occurred. Citrix EdgeSite is covered in depth in 12. Establish a regular testing schedule for all redundant systems. Many organizations have backup plans that fail when called upon. Therefore, it is important to test and document the backup systems until you are comfortable that they can be relied upon in a time of crisis. Establish support-escalation procedures for all systems before there is an outage. Document the support phone numbers, customer account information, and what needs to be said to get past the first tier of support. Review the vendor service levels for critical components, and assess where the vendor may need to supplement them or have spare parts on hand. Is the vendor capable of meeting their established service level What is the recourse if they fail to perform as promised Is support available somewhere else Is the cost of having an extra, preconfigured unit on hand in case of failure justified

This is a console output statement. It causes the message This is my first C++ program. to be displayed on the screen. It accomplishes this by using the output operator <<. The << operator causes whatever expression is on its right side to be output to the device specified on its left side. cout is a predefined identifier that stands for console output, which (most generally) refers to the computer s screen. Thus, this statement causes the message to be output to the screen. Notice that this statement ends with a semicolon. In fact, all C++ statements end with a semicolon. The message "This is my first C++ program." is a string. In C++, a string is a sequence of characters enclosed between double quotes. As you will see, strings are used frequently in C++. The next line in the program is

the obvious exception of computer and video game software by virtue of a rich and powerful interactive model with a very simple remote-control interface. Just about anything that can be done on the Internet with Java and HTML can be done on a Blu-ray disc minus the download delays and poor quality video. With BD Live it can be updated and expanded ad infinitum. Self-contained ease of use. Blu-ray programs can include integrated instruction with on-screen text, popup help, and full interaction. Rather than being tied to a linear presentation, the viewer can select appropriate material, instantly repeat any piece, or jump from section to section. Unlike older commercial media such as videotape, audiotape, and laserdisc, Blu-ray Discs need no ancillary printed material for training or user education everything explaining how to use the disc can be put on the disc itself. Portability. A portable Blu-ray player, about the size of a hardback book, can be slipped into a briefcase and hooked up to any high-definition television or video monitor (and some players can downscale for standard televisions). One-on-one or small-group presentations can be done using a portable player with an integrated LCD video screen or a laptop computer with a Blu-ray drive. Large-audience presentations can be done with a video projector and a player or laptop computer. There are even high-definition video projectors with built-in DVD or Blu-ray players. Beyond presentations, portable players and laptops can be used for training and learning in any location. Desktop HD video publishing. Desktop video editing and recordable DVD did to the video industry what desktop publishing and laser printers did to the print industry. The same thing is happening to the film and HD video industries with HD equipment and Blu-ray technology. Video production can be done from beginning to end with inexpensive consumer or prosumer equipment and a computer. A complete setup is remarkably affordable a consumer-grade highdefinition digital video camera (under $2000) can be plugged into a digital video editing computer with a BD-recordable drive (under $2000), and the final product can be assembled and recorded onto a BD-R disc with BD authoring software (less than $200). This constitutes an entire high-definition video publishing system on a desktop for under $4,000, or under $2000 at the low-end. Mixed media. As with DVD, Blu-ray is a melting pot for many different information sources. A single disc can contain all the information normally provided by such disparate sources as videotapes, newspapers, computer databases, audiotapes, printed directories, and information kiosks. Training videos can be accompanied with printable manuals, product demonstrations can include spec sheets and order forms, databases can include Internet links for updated information, product catalogs can include video demonstrations, and so on. Blu-ray is the perfect medium for this because it provides high-definition video (unlike DVD or the Internet); searchable, dynamic text (unlike paper); hours and hours of random-access audio (unlike tapes); and, a rapidly growing base of devices to read it all.
