when there are too many members to fit on the screen. The members at the bottom are stacked up on the right-hand side. Clicking on the stack has the effect of moving members from the stack into the visible area, and a stack now forms on the left-hand side. In this way, the members are dealt from the right-hand stack, into the middle area, and then onto the left-hand stack. This makes the decomp usable even if the user drills down to levels with thousands of members. Figure 6-44 also shows a Pareto chart at the bottom of the decomp. One of the complaints some customers have about the decomp is that all the boxes are the same size, and thus they do not indicate the relative size of the measure for one box compared to another. The Pareto chart does this by the showing relative sizes in a bar chart, with the values for the bars being shown on the left axis. Unless there are many members, the Pareto chart shows a bar for all the members. Those that are currently displayed on the screen are shown in a lighter color than those in the stack; the bar colors match the colors of the boxes in the decomp. There is also a thin line moving from the lower left to the upper right in the Pareto chart. This line shows the growth from zero to 100%, with the values for the line being on the right axis. This shows how quickly a level reaches a certain percentage. For example, the line crosses the 50% threshold on the third bar, which means that the first three cities in the Hessen province account for over 50% of the total for all cities in Hessen. The bars of the Pareto chart are live, meaning that a user can hover the mouse over one and get a pop-up window that shows the actual value as well as the percentages of the group and total. In addition, clicking on one of the bars will make that box visible if it is not already. This is useful for clicking on a bar that represents a member that is stacked up on the left or right. The member for that bar is automatically dealt to the visible region, and other members are stacked up on the left or right as necessary. The Pareto chart can be customized to some degree using the two buttons located off to the right of it. The top button will toggle just the percentage line on and off, while the bottom button will toggle the entire Pareto chart on and off. Finally, clicking on either the left or right axis will cycle through a series of turning off all the grid lines, turning on just grid lines for the axis on which the user is clicking, and turning on grid lines for both the left and right axes. Returning to the decomp itself, the full power has not yet been demonstrated.
