Various filters may be applied to the SS7 traffic being displayed, or stored in the buffer in order to select the required data. In addition, triggers may be set to start and stop information capture. Figure 33.10 shows a particular example of filter selection, with the highlighted line in each window showing the operator s choice. The windows represent a sequence of choices. As each choice is made, the operator is presented with the next level of parameters from which to choose. Triggers to control the storage of traffic in a buffer are set up using the same process as shown for selecting filters in Figure 33.10. Triggers may be logically combined, and commonly used filter and trigger definitions may be stored and recalled.

Consider investing in an electric staple gun. This will aid greatly in the anchoring of security cable unless, of course, you want to develop Popeye-esque forearms. Electric staple guns range in price, but you can find them for as little as US$33. When you get to your sensor s location, trim back the cabling to a workable amount, strip off the outer insulator sheath, then, using a wire stripper, strip the wires you ll be using. After your sensor has been connected, tuck excess cabling into the hole in the wall.

When compared to HDLC and PPP, Frame Relay is much more complex in operation, and many more terms are used to describe its components and operation. Table 26-1 contains an overview of these terms. Only the configuration of LMI is discussed in this book the configuration of other parameters, such as BC and BE, is beyond the scope of this book. The proceeding sections describe the operation of Frame Relay and cover these terms in more depth.
Ethernet is rapidly becoming the standard interface for handoff from service providers to customers. Where all services are delivered over Ethernet interfaces, the cheapest access technology is generally to deploy Ethernet switches. But in order to scale such a deployment, carriers need to deploy a carrier-class technology into the metro core. Because most service providers wish to offer IP services as well as Ethernet services, they often deploy IP/MPLS routers into the metro edge and core and use them to interconnect the access layer of Ethernet switches, offering both Layer 2 and Layer 3 services. In very large metros, carriers may deploy as many as four layers of equipment (see Figure 14.6):
