Image-parameter design of Butterworth filters is the only design technique that readily allows filters to be calculated without computer software, or by use of extensive and tedious lookup tables. However, sometimes impractical component values and unoptimized filter responses can result from this technique. It is therefore always a necessity that filters employed for any stringent wireless application be designed not with these image-parameter methods presented, but with the far more complex, but more accurate, modern filter theory techniques. Modern filter theory calculations are performed only with a computer loaded with the proper software (see Sec. 10.10, Wireless Design Software ). But for less-demanding applications, or for filters with a low number of poles, image-parameter design will usually suffice. It must always be kept in mind that, whether a filter has been designed in a computer or by hand, distributed reactances at frequencies greater than 30 MHz even with surface mount components will begin to noticeably decrease the filter s center frequency; so much so that a lumped filter designed for 500 MHz may actually resonate at 450 MHz (or less). In addition, the passband may lose its expected shape, and the return loss may also drop. Unless an expensive software program can be obtained that takes some of these parasitic effects into account, the design of lumped filters at higher frequencies should be approached with great caution.

Introduction to Cellular Systems Although cellular radio is a relative newcomer to mobile communications, the concept of a cellular system dates back to the early 1940s, and the principle of a mobile phone system goes back still earlier. The first mobile phone system was an experimental system installed in 1921 by the Detroit police department. It used transmission frequencies at 2 MHz band and was capable only of one-way transmission. The called police officer had to use the public telephone network to answer the call. But it was the predecessor of today s mobile phone networks. The cellular concept was conceived in the 1940s. Planners imagined a system of transmitters that could cover certain geographic areas and provide very efficient communications for a large number of users. Unfortunately, however, the technology required to realize such a system wouldn t exist for almost another 40 years. The objective of providing two-way communication became more realizable as the basic concepts were moved upwards in frequency, and the development of VLSI made it possible to reduce the physical size and power consumption of the devices, thus opening up new opportunities in the deployment of cellular radio systems. Today s mobile telephone systems began in earnest with the Mobile Telephone System (MTS) in 1964. It operated at 150 MHz band and its major advancement was automatic channel selection. It was followed five years later by the Improved Mobile Telephone System (IMTS) at 450 MHz. This system set standards for current mobile phone systems. The first truly cellular radio system was introduced in the Scandinavian countries (Norway, Denmark, Sweden, and Finland) in 1979. This was the Nordic Mobile Telephone (NMT) system. NMT was followed three years later by the Advanced Mobile Phone System (AMPS) in the US and Canada, followed a year later by the Total Access

Assess the available human resources in detail, and develop a list of missing skills on the team. Skills for the BIM process can come from either inhouse team members or other members of the project team, i.e., the consultants or subcontractors; or, if necessary, they can be contracted out to consultants who are not otherwise part of the project team. The advantages and disadvantages of these options will need to be understood clearly before making any decisions in this area. The fact that BIM is not about the model, but about the understanding that results from the modeling process makes it a large advantage for the project to keep this process confined to the project team. Only if the project team members do all the work themselves will the understanding about the project gained from creating and handling the BIM remain within the team. In other words, if the modeling is outsourced, the understanding gained by the modeler will not be available to the project team to the same degree as the understanding of a team member modeler. The interactions among the team members are extremely beneficial to the advantageous development and understanding of the project. All team-related processes need to be addressed at this time, including roles and responsibilities, contractual relationships, collaboration incentives, communication protocols, etc. The team will have to go through all sorts of team dynamics before the project will have taken its course; it is not possible to overestimate the importance of preparation. Project Team Dynamics The team structure has to be defined so that each member s role in relation to all the others on the team will be clear and productive. This can be represented in an organizational chart showing the relationships and responsibilities of the team members. This structure will also result in a communications protocol that establishes the flow of information for the various processes.
