The untethering of IT investments requires careful advance planning, auditing, and maintenance. IT and mobility upgrades are also disruptive; the temporary delays in customer production during the upgrade to expanded mobility access need to be accounted for and carefully administered as part of process improvement. By its nature, infrastructure improvement is disruptive, whether it s a stretch of freeway or an IT improvement. The outcome, however, is long-lasting, impressive, and very much worth the pain of the transitions. Not only does the physical process improvement require interruption, but it takes time to change processes, even though mobility likely provides the greatest amount of process and operational improvement with the least amount of disruption if planned and deployed correctly. Never trivial to achieve in complex environments such as healthcare and manufacturing, untethering provides incredible amounts of business acceleration. This acceleration tends to be slower at first and is tied to the amount of fine-tuning mobility required to provide its full measure of potential. Once the bugs are cleared off and employees are lightly trained, the acceleration of productivity, collaboration, and connectivity is impressive. Employees quickly find new ways to communicate and quickly add new types of information both to transmit and receive. Application providers step up shortly thereafter with refined software that makes mobile collaboration and connectivity more relevant, reliable, simple to use, and productive. Capitalizing on these changes typically requires more than one budget cycle, because the improvements afforded by mobility require investments not only in wireless access points and controllers, but also in clients, security, applications, training, and maintenance. Untethering applications involves a whole lot more than simply installing some antennas; every layer of the OSI stack is affected. It also profoundly affects the way a business is operated, secured, connected, and managed. The full scope from initial proposal to maintenance certainly takes multiple calendar quarters, if not more than a year, in major enterprise deployments. From the technology integrator s perspective, the issue is not simply one of changing a customer s IT approach to include wireless. Rather, the net deliverable to be gained from wireless network assessments is to improve the customer operation constantly and continually. IT is not a static investment, because by its nature, business operational development changes and continually improves; it evolves and adapts to capture changes in how the money flows within the customer target markets. The best integrators propose multiyear visions of that, which maximizes market capture and customer management for the customer. The focus is always on closing the gap between the top business operational problems and the manner in which the mobility investment resolves those problems. Most customers can be shown significant ways in which improved mobility can further enhance their operational processes. The wireless network assessment enables this through an engagement sequence that not only identifies the delta between the customer s top operational problems and actual IT capabilities, but also includes the acquisition of emerging industry best practices and a plan for continued coupling of IT investments against ever-changing market conditions.

The importance of connecting a real-time, dynamic link between the teacher and student is an essential element of the educational process. Teachers or, in the professional environment, presenters are challenged to remain connected to each student and to understand whether they are mentally connected to the teacher and, more importantly, whether they are receiving information in the impactful manner intended by the teacher. Educators today are using smart handheld devices to ensure that the communication link between the teacher and student remains constant. For example, Sento s wireless handset, shown in the following illustration, enables students to interface with the instructor in real time through quizzes, pop questions, and voting. The handsets can do more than that, however, by including student access curriculum, student grades, homework assignments, and logistics information such as upcoming field trips, school events, and holidays online and remotely.
