JC Mackin Two questions. First, how many of you work for organizations in which all users are configured to be administrators of their own computers Next, how many of you work for organizations in which computers often get infected by spyware, viruses, and other malware I m guessing that more of you who answered yes to the first question also answered yes to the second question. What s the connection between the two Plain and simple: logging on as an administrator in Windows XP and Windows 2000 leaves you more vulnerable to damaging, network-based attacks. This problem has a name the administrator problem and it s been known for years. Microsoft tried to address the problem in the past by encouraging users in Windows XP to log on without local administrative privileges and to use tools such as the Runas command whenever such privileges were needed. But this prescription turned out to be unfeasible for most users. To fix the administrator problem, what really needed to change was the underlying vulnerability that caused it, and this, in turn, required a drastic redesign of the way user accounts interacted with Windows. The result of this redesign process is a Windows Vista feature called User Account Control (UAC), which is enabled by default. In UAC even administrators run without administrative privileges most of the time, and administrators must give consent before any administrative task is performed. Meanwhile, nonadministrators, now officially called standard users in Windows Vista, can perform any administrative task simply by entering administrative credentials when needed. If these changes sound like a bit of a pain to get used to, well, that is precisely the idea: UAC is a bit of a pain designed to prevent the much larger pain of having your computer taken over by an Internet invader. Like a law requiring you to fasten your seat belt, UAC seems a little inconvenient and constraining at first, but in no time you ll get used to it and even grow to appreciate the feature for the improved security it brings.

When you develop the ASP.NET code, you typically test it on a development machine with its own copies of machine.config and site web.config files. When you deploy the application on a production box, especially in an ISP scenario, you might not be able to restore the same settings. One possible reason is that the administrator does not want you to modify the current settings because they work well for all other applications or because of security concerns. You can work around the issue by simply replicating any needed global settings into the application s root web.config. If you are deploying your code to a service provider, you might find that many configuration elements have been locked down and cannot be overridden. (I ll say more about this aspect in a moment.) In this case, a new application-specific <location> section created in machine.config or the site s web.config can contain all the machine settings needed for your application without breaking others. Whenever possible, though, you should try to replicate needed changes into the application s web.config. This should always be the first option considered because it makes the entire application self-contained.

Replication between Oracle and SQL Server is a great step forward in interoperability between Oracle and SQL Server. In addition to replication, it is now possible to monitor Oracle using a plug-in for Microsoft Operations Manager. This interoperability allows you to manage your entire operation from one console, thus easing the administration burden.
The DispatcherTimer class exposes the Tick event, which can be raised at regular intervals according to the value of the Interval property. Setting Interval to the TimeSpan shown causes the Tick event to be raised once a second. The timer starts when you invoke the Start method. Methods that subscribe to the Tick event must match the signature of the EventHandler delegate. The EventHandler delegate has the same signature as the RoutedEventHandler delegate described earlier. The Ticker constructor creates an instance of this delegate referring to the OnTimedEvent method and subscribes to the Tick event. The OnTimedEvent method in the Ticker class obtains the current time by examining the static DateTime. Now property. The DateTime structure is part of the .NET Framework class library. The Now property returns a DateTime structure. This structure has several elds, including those used by the OnTimedEvent method shown in the following code and called Hour, Minute, and Second. The OnTimedEvent method uses this information in turn to raise the tick event through the Notify method:

Each ribbon tab s name has a check box next to it. If a tab s box is selected, then that tab appears on the ribbon. You can hide a tab by clearing the check box and bring it back by selecting the check box. You can also change the order in which the tabs are displayed on the ribbon. To do so, click the name of the tab you want to move and then click the Move Up or Move Down arrows to reposition the selected tab.

Bypasses all CIW setup options other than selection of OS image. Active Directory searches for a target computer UUID matching a UUID in a (prestaged) Active Directory computer account and uses the Active Directory computer name. During installation, if no matching UUID is found, one is constructed from the location in Active Directory and the selected automatic-naming format. Enables selection of Active Directory location and computer account name. Restarts Setup upon installation failure starts CIW before image copy phase, then users are presented with a Restart Setup option on their CIW boot display. Provides access to tools for troubleshooting and maintenance (diagnostics, system flash BIOS update). These tools are installed in the RemoteInstall share.
