Be cautious about selecting a short interval between server refreshes. If too many team members choose too short an interval, server performance could degrade. To immediately synchronize the current list, view a different list and then switch back to the one you want.

Everyone that helped bring this book to completion deserves my deepest thanks. The team put together by Microsoft Press worked hard to keep the project on track under challenging deadlines. Thanks to Hilary Long and Maureen Zimmerman for kicking off the project, Karen Szall for keeping the project rolling smoothly, Vicky Thulman for thoughtfully improving my words, and Carl Rabeler for meticulously reviewing the technical details of this book. Thanks also to Jason Carlson and Brian Welcker of Microsoft for introducing me to Reporting Services early in the development cycle of the product, and for answering my questions to help me better understand the product. I owe many thanks to the team at Hitachi Consulting who made significant contributions to the content of this book. Much of the thinking about teaching others how to use Reporting Services was developed with my coauthors of the Fast Track to Reporting Services course: Elizabeth Vitt, Reed Jacobson, Scot Reagin, Susan O Connell, and Dave DuVarney. Special thanks to Reed Jacobson for helping me expand upon the ideas from that course through many hours of brainstorming together, for undertaking experiments with me to test our understanding of Reporting Services, and for sharing his advice as an author of Step by Step books. Thanks to Dave DuVarney, Steve Muise, and Mark Dreesen for providing invaluable insights and useful code samples. Elizabeth Vitt deserves my thanks not only for sharing her technical knowledge about Reporting Services, but also for her moral support at any hour of day or night. Thanks also to Hilary Feier and the management of Hitachi Consulting for giving me the opportunity and time to work on this book.

Here, you set the preferred DNS server address for the network connection named Local Area Connection to The Static option says that you want to use the local setting for DNS rather than the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) setting when applicable. You can confirm the new setting by typing ipconfig /all at the command prompt and checking for the DNS server entry. The server should have the same setting for IP address and primary DNS server.

You can open a file created with Office 2003, Office XP, Office 2000, or Office 97 in an Office 2010 program, but new features will not be available. The file name appears in the title bar with [Compatibility Mode] to its right. You can work in Compatibility mode, or you can convert the document to the current file format by displaying the Info page of the Backstage view and clicking the Convert button in the Compatibility Mode section. You can also click Save As in the Backstage view to save a copy of the file in the current format. If you work with people who are using Office 2003, Office XP, Office 2000, or Office 97, you can save your documents in a format that they will be able to open and use by choosing the corresponding 97-2003 file format in the Save As Type list, or they can download the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint File Formats from the Microsoft Download Center (located at so that they can open current Office files in their version of Office.

Choose names that have the widest compatibility Although you can use just about any name for a printer, you should keep the printer name as short as possible. For maximum compatibility, it is recommended that the printer name be no more than 31 characters and not contain spaces. This will make the printer easier to work with from the command line and in applications that have printer name limitations.

This query converts the ring buffer data to an XML instance and then uses the nodes XML function to create one row per event node found. It then uses the ordinal positions of the various data elements within the event nodes to map the data to output columns. Of course, more advanced sessions require more advanced XQuery to determine the type of each event and do some case logic if the events involved in the session have different schemas which, thankfully, the two in this example do not. Once you ve gotten to this point, the data is just that standard tabular data, which can be aggregated, joined, inserted into a table, or whatever else you want to do with it. You can also read from the asynchronous le target via T-SQL, using the sys.fn_xe_ le_target_ read_ le table-valued function. This function returns one row per event, but you still have to get comfortable with XML; the event s data, exposed in a column called event_data, is in an XML format similar to data in the ring buffer target. Eventually we can expect a user interface to bear some of the XML burden for us, but just as with SQL Trace, even the most powerful user interfaces aren t enough when complex analysis is required. Therefore, XML is here to stay for those DBAs who wish to be XE power users.
The meaning of some of these counters most notably, those related to contention and locks will become evident later in this chapter.
time is the time that the action that you are measuring takes to complete. Wait time, or queue time, is the time that the action that you are measuring is waiting for all of the jobs ahead of it to complete. The response time of your job is equal to the service time plus the queue time, as this formula shows:

If you have a CD-RW drive or removable storage device installed on your computer or if you have a handheld device, such as a Pocket PC, on which you would like to play music, you can easily copy files from your computer using Windows Media Player. To copy a file, you must first have saved it in the Media Library. In this exercise, you will copy selected audio tracks from the Media Library to aCD-RW drive or removable storage device. There are no practice files for this exercise, but you must have a CD-RW drive or removable storage device attached to your computer. Follow these steps: 1. Log on to Windows, if you have not already done so. 2. On the Start menu, point to All Programs, and then click Windows Media Player. Windows Media Player opens. 3. On the taskbar, click Copy to CD or Device. Windows Media Player searches for appropriate storage devices. The search results are listed in the Music on Device pane. 4. In the Music to Copy drop-down list, select the album or type of music from which you want to make your selection. The available files appear in the left pane. By default, all the listed files are selected. 5. Clear the check boxes of any files that you do not want to copy. 6. In the Music on Device drop-down list, select the destination drive. If you select a removable storage device that already contains music files, the folders and audio files on the destination drive appear in the right pane. 7. Click Copy Music. As each of the selected tracks is copied from your hard disk, its status changes from Inspecting to Copying to Complete.
