If your control inherits from WebControl, it exposes several properties related to the user interface, such as Font, ForeColor, and BackColor. In the Render method you should output these values as attributes of the main tag in an orderly fashion, with mul tiple calls to the AddAttribute or AddStyleAttribute methods of the HtmlTextWriter object. To keep the HTML sent to the client as slim as possible, you should output those properties only if they re different from their default value. The WebControl class offers a helper method called AddAttributesToRender, which lets you render all the attributes that have a nondefault value with a single call. To show this method in action, I prepared a ComboBoxEx custom control, which is similar to a DropDownList control but exposes an ItemList property that takes a comma-delimited list of elements in the control:
At times, you might need to perform a custom action when the .NET class is registered as a COM component by RegAsm (or by Visual Studio .NET, if you have selected the Register For COM Interop option). For example, you might want to ask the end user for a password or add some keys to the registry (in addition to those added by the regis tration process). Accomplishing these tasks is as easy as adding a shared procedure to the class and marking it with the ComRegisterFunction attribute:
