Schemas are new features in SQL Server 2005 that provide a means to group objects within a database together. In previous versions of SQL Server, objects were created by and owned by a database user. SQL Server 2005 introduces a schema between an object and a user. Database users now own a schema, and schemas own objects. This is a significant advance for managing objects within a database. If database users directly owned objects, it would not be possible to drop a user unless the objects were reassigned to a different owner. Reassigning an object to a different owner would change the name of the object. By introducing a schema between users

The best place to extend the Active Directory schema is on the computer that holds the Schema Master role in the forest. In complicated Active Directory environments, you may need to locate the schema master. Although almost all the practices in this book involve a single computer that serves as domain controller, Exchange server, and holder of all FSMO roles, this practice will assume that you need to locate the schema master and then prepare it so that you can extend the schema. To complete this practice, perform the following steps: 1. While logged on as administrator, click Start and then click Run. 2. In the Run dialog box, type regsvr32 schmmgmt.dll. 3. Click OK to dismiss the dialog box informing you that the registration of this DLL file has succeeded. 4. In the Run dialog box, type MMC and then click OK. 5. Add the Active Directory Schema snap-in to the new console. 6. In the console, right-click Active Directory Schema and then click Operations Master. This will display the dialog box shown in Figure 1-5, which will inform you of which computer in the forest currently holds the Schema Master role.
To start the practice test software, follow these steps: 1. Click Start, All Programs, Microsoft Press Training Kit Exam Prep. A window appears that shows all the Microsoft Press training kit exam prep suites installed on your computer. 2. Double-click the practice test that you want to use.
or a parent for the existing forest root domain, and you cannot rename the forest root domain. forward lookup In the Domain Name System (DNS), a query process in which the friendly DNS domain name of a host computer is searched to find its Internet Pro tocol (IP) address. fully qualified domain name (FQDN) A DNS domain name that fully and uniquely defines an object s location in the DNS namespace. full zone transfer (AXFR) The standard query type supported by all Domain Name System (DNS) servers to update and synchronize zone data when the zone has been changed. When a DNS query is made using AXFR as the specified query type, the entire zone is transferred as the response. functional level The mode in which an Active Directory domain or forest is oper ating. A domain can exist in a number of functional levels, each of which is determined by the versions of Windows Server running in the domain or forest. In Windows 2000 mixed mode (where Windows NT, Windows 2000, and Windows 2003 servers may run), the domain has limitations (such as 40,000 objects) imposed by the Windows NT 4 domain model. However, Windows 2000 domain controllers and Windows NT 4 backup domain controllers can coexist within the domain without problems. Switching to Windows 2000 native mode (which allows Windows 2000 and 2003 servers only) allows the directory to scale up to millions of objects. Windows Server 2003 level provides the full functionality of Windows Server 2003 but requires that all servers run Windows Server 2003.
