TechNet (http://www.microsoft.com/technet/default.mspx/) offers comprehensive help with applications, operating systems, and components such as Active Directory, Microsoft Internet Explorer, Windows XP Professional, and Office applications, includ ing how to plan, deploy, maintain, and support them. You can also access information on security, get downloads, read how-to articles, read columns, and access troubleshooting and support pages. Because your job will focus on troubleshooting and resolving end user requests, you will likely spend most of your time accessing the trou bleshooting pages. A sample TechNet page is shown in Figure 2-5.

Your final system test should be a comprehensive integration test that is performed in a testing environment that is identical to your production environment. In addition, once your code has been moved to the production environment, it is wise to perform this same test again (if possible) to ensure that the deployment was complete and successful.

To complete the lessons in this chapter, you must have done the following:
The following question is intended to reinforce key information presented in this les son. If you are unable to answer this question, review the lesson materials and try the question again. You can find the answer to the question in the Questions and Answers section at the end of this chapter. A user has set up Internet Connection Sharing on a host computer that runs Windows XP but is experiencing problems with his clients being able to connect to both the Internet and other computers on the network. Which of the following items could be the cause of the problems (Select all that apply.) A. There is a DHCP server on the network. B. There is a DNS server on the network. C. There are computers on the network with static IP addresses. D. There is a Windows 2000 server on the network.
Take a Practice Test
In 3, Searching, Modifying, and Encoding Text, you learned how to use regular expressions to validate user input. There are even specific examples in 3 for validating e-mail addresses. Although you could use regular expressions to validate input in this example, it would be redundant. The MailMessage object includes logic for validating input, as the next step demonstrates. In some circumstances, security might be important enough to justify having two levels of validation. In this example, the additional complexity and increased chance of introducing a bug are not justified.
Reentrant Concurrency
Group scopes (global, universal, domain local, and universal) define group characteristics related to membership, replication, and availability of the group. In an enterprise, role-based management suggests that groups should be viewed as either defining a role or defining a business rule. Role groups are generally implemented as global groups, and rules are defined using domain local groups. A group s member attribute is a multivalued attribute containing the DNs of the group s members. Each member s memberOf attribute is automatically updated to reflect changes in membership. When you add a user to a group, you are always changing the group s member attribute. The memberOf attribute, which is read-only, is called a backlink. You can delegate the management of group membership by assigning the Allow Write Members permission, which grants write permission to the member attribute. Directory Services tools such as Dsquery, Dsget, and Dsmod can be used to list, create, and modify groups and their membership. CSVDE and LDIFDE can import and export groups. Additionally, LDIFDE can modify the membership of existing groups. The Dsadd, Dsmove, and Dsrm commands can add, move, and delete groups, respectively.

The Service method help page (see Figure 2-2) not only contains a button that can be used to invoke your Web method, but it also provides sample request and response SOAP messages. Because the .NET Framework 2.0 supports both versions of SOAP (1.1 and 1.2), sample messages for each version are included on this page. By default, Web pages with an .asmx extension are handled by aspnet_isapi.dll, which is the standard Internet Server API (ISAPI) extension for the .NET Framework. This handling is seen if you go to the application configuration properties for your Web service (see Figure 2-3). Messages that are sent to this handler are forwarded to the .asmx handler, which takes care of handling the XML, SOAP, and Web Services Description Language (WSDL) for you. It essentially shields you, the developer, from all the nasty details behind the scenes. The .asmx handler inspects the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) message and looks for information that tells it how to handle the SOAP request. Standard SOAP messages rely on an industry-defined schema known as WSDL to define what exactly goes into a SOAP message. The latest version of the SOAP specification is version 1.2, which is based on the XML Infoset. The purpose of the XML Infoset is to ensure that
