Troubleshooting Connectivity If you cannot connect to a remote host, you first need to check the various hardware connections (wired and wireless) in your organization and ensure that all network devices are up and running. If these basic checks do not find the problem, the Internet Protocol Security (IPSec) configuration might not be properly Configured, or firewall problems (such as incorrectly Configured packet filters) might exist. You can use the IP Security Policies Management console, shown in Figure 6-26, to check and configure IPSec policies and the Windows Firewall With Advanced Security console (shown previously in Figures 6-11 and 6-12 in Lesson 1) to check and configure IPv6-based packet filters.

It is also possible to suspend and resume public folder replication across the entire Exchange organization. To do this, the user account must be a member of the Exchange Organization Administrator role. The commands that can be used are Suspend-PublicFolderReplication and Resume-PublicFolderReplication. The Replicas parameter allows you to control which mailbox servers a public folder replicates to. The specified servers must exist within Active Directory. You can also use this command to change the existing replica set for a public folder, adding and removing mailbox servers as necessary. To configure the public folder named \HR-Folder to replicate only to the mailbox servers HR-MBX2 and HR-MBX3, run the following command on the server that hosts the original \HR-Folder public folder:

This is another example of a workaround required because this version of Windows PowerShell does not deliver an Active Directory provider. Some day in the future, you will be able to use the Move-Item cmdlet as you can with the file system and registry providers, but not yet. In VBScript, you use an approach that seems a bit backward. You connect to the target container and then you grab the user object and move it to the container. The following two lines of code do the trick:

Converting between binary and hexadecimal notations might be straightforward but it is time consuming, so I'm offering you a trick. When converting from binary to hexadecimal, use Table 1 2 to look up each group of four digits from left to right, and jot down its hexadecimal equivalent. For example, to convert 01101010 to hexadecimal, look up 0110 to get 6, and then look up 1010 to get A, so that you end up with the hexadecimal number 6A. If the number of digits in the binary number isn't evenly divisible by 4, just pad the left side with zeros. To convert hexadecimal numbers to binary, use Table 1 2 to look up each hexadecimal digit from left to right, and jot down its binary equivalent. For example, to convert 1F from hexadecimal to binary, look up 1 to get 0001, look up F to get 1111, and string them together to get 00011111. One last problem: Is 12 a decimal number or a hexadecimal number You don't have enough information to know for sure. The solution is to always use the prefix 0x at the beginning of hexadecimal numbers. 0x12 is then a hexadecimal number, whereas 12 is a decimal number. This is the standard format for hexadecimal numbers, and it's the format that Microsoft uses in its documentation and in all the tools you'll use in this book. Tip If converting binary, hexadecimal, and decimal numbers is too much work for you, as it certainly is for me, use Windows XP's Calculator. Click Start, All Programs, Accessories, and Calculator. Make sure you change to scientific view by clicking Scientific on the View menu. In the top left part of Calculator's window, you see four buttons: Hex, Dec, Oct, and Bin. Click the button corresponding to the notation in which you want to input a number, type the number, and then click the button corresponding to the notation to which you want to convert the number.

In this exercise, you will build on the result of Exercise 1 by improving the design so that the MapPoint service can be invoked asynchronously. This enhances the usability experience because the UI will now be responsive while the application retrieves map images asynchronously in the background. To implement this, you must make two changes to the solution. In the UI code, you must add a status bar that provides a visual cue that some work is being done in the background. In the agent code, you ll add a method for invoking map retrieval asynchronously, with the method accepting a .NET delegate that can be used to call back the consumer when the retrieval is done. Note that to provide asynchronous invocation on your agent, you cannot simply map asynchronous calls on the agent to underlying asynchronous calls on the proxy. Why not Because in defining your agent s interface, the choice made here was to wrap calls on the agent to two successive calls on the underlying proxy, so instead of trying to handle the coordination around two successive asynchronous calls on the proxy, you need to add the asynchronous invocation capability manually at the agent level and, in the separate thread that results, the two methods on the proxy can be called in a synchronous fashion. 1. Navigate to the <InstallHome>/4/Lesson2/Exercise2/<language>/Before directory and double-click the Exercise2.sln file to open the solution in Visual Studio. The solution consists of the two projects as they were completed in Exercise 1. Add two delegate declarations that will be used in this implementation. Add the following to the MapPointServiceAgent (.cs or .vb as appropriate) file, above the definition of the MapPointServiceAgent class:
