building an AppWidget with moving pieces behind the scenes, you now have an appreciation of how and where AppWidgets can be deployed and how Android may be leveraged to deliver intuitive and high-value applications to your customers. In the next chapter we look at another important feature set of Android devices: the numerous sensors that make these devices much more than a mere telephony tool.

costly effort than just translating some strings in the application. Additionally, we discussed earlier in the chapter the idea of filtering out results that are potentially not usable for a particular user. Refer again to figure 18.12. Note that this screen is shown in Spanish but contains a job with English comments. Some elements of a job may be unable to be translated for example, proper names of products or a physical address but the comments themselves should be carefully distributed to only users who can be productive with the information. The point in demonstrating some of the shortcomings of this (partially) localized application is to emphasize that localizing an application after it has been released is much more work than starting with localization in mind. Consequently, localizing an application Figure 18.12 Speedbumps in localization: OPEN status down the road adds more cost than if you d designed the application for localization from the start. In addition, the user experience may be compromised based on some of the steps required to make a localized application fit into an infrastructure that didn t contemplate the possibility beforehand.
One of the main uses of JavaScript is to check and validate user input before a web form is submitted to the server. To perform this task, you often have to write client logic that limits the values a user can enter in a text field. As an example, suppose you want a user to enter some text in a text box. The requirements say that the text must contain only letters no digits. To implement this task, you must access the text-box element, handle its keypress event, and filter the text typed by the user. Listing 2.3 shows how this task can be accomplished using the Microsoft Ajax Library. Notably, the resulting code runs in all the browsers supported by the library.
One of the easily misunderstood facets of Cactus is that it does not actually make a connection to the URL provided, as shown in the beginGetValueParam of listing 12.8. The connection is made to one of the Cactus redirectors. 12.7.4 Cactus summary Cactus is the premiere way to test server-side objects through a J2EE web container. It takes care of all the hard work involved in starting and stopping application servers. There are many application servers with Cactus support already provided, but it can be

The order portion of the application will be used for checkout. Once the customer has made all of their item selections and wants to purchase the items, they will select checkout from the cart. The cart will take them through a process of confirmation, payment, billing, shipping, and final confirmation. Once the order is completed, it will be viewable by the user in their order history.

Problem tracking tools The tool you use to track application errors during (and after ) testing is an important component of your development process. Software developers often struggle with what to do once a problem has been discovered. The bug must be identified, documented, and reproduced several times. Then it must be assigned to a developer for resolution and tracked until it has been fixed. Seems simple, but the implementation of this process is often overly complicated and mismanaged. Teams usually implement problem tracking in very nonstandardized and problematic ways. Emails, spreadsheets, and MS Access databases are not uncommon implementations of bug logs. Many development projects use a bug tracking database, usually written in-house by a college intern with limited skills. These one-off tracking mechanisms suffer because they do not feature a notification system and are often improperly used by testers, project managers, and developers. To generalize a bit, there are a couple of key components to making bug tracking and resolution successful on a J2EE development project, or, for that matter, any other software development project. The first component is to design a process for error resolution as part of your development methodology. The second component is to have a tool that is easy to use and provides built-in workflow and management reporting. Ideally, you would have a tracking
