This kind of defect can live anywhere in your system; anywhere it holds an assumption about the behavior of the underlying implementation. This can be hard to track down. We found and fixed this particular bug by redeploying a version of the program with full debug information included; once we found that the errant line contained the cookies.length test, we could infer what the problem was. The only way to find these problems is through extensive tests; HttpUnit and Cactus are your friends. The role of Ant is executing these functional tests on every target system and presenting the reports cleanly. 18.1.2 Different Java run-time behavior Is the target system running the same JVM version as the staging systems With the same version of the JVM: client or server What threading mechanism is it using How is its memory and garbage collector configured Any difference in the underlying JRE is going to affect your code somehow, be it performance, synchronization, or memory usage. You should, of course, be using the same JVM in development as production. Operations staff, as do developers, sometimes take the initiative to upgrade or downgrade JVM for reasons of their own, which makes synchronizing JVM versions and configurations harder to control than one might think. We could add a new test that validates properties to our <happy> JSP tag, which would let us name a property and its required value. Then, we could write JSPs to assert what our system properties must be:

Both of these methods check to see if their property has been initialized. If not, they re initialized and returned. The final method you need to implement is applicationWillTerminate. This is where you ll save your managed object context to the data store. You save your context every time the user makes a change to the data. This code is needed in case some unsaved data is lying around when the application exits. Listing 9.11 shows the code for this method.

data source and provides a simple interface for other components to use. The Data Access Object pattern is discussed in detail in appendix A. To implement this pattern, we use an EJB session bean called the CustomerDataBean. This bean will obtain the customer data using a CustomerDAO (data access object), which obtains customer data in their raw format from a JDBC data source, converts them to XML using JDOM, and returns them to the CustomerDataBean. The CustomerDataBean then returns the JDOM Document to the remote caller. This scenario is depicted in figure 3.3. save images vectors

The Attributes interface is part of the JNDI package that comes with Sun s JDK, and is implemented by the BasicAttributes class, which is also part of that package. The Contact class is our bean that we want to map to our LDAP directory. Finally, the getAttributeValue() method is a helper method that simplifies the mapping process by handling null values and turning JNDI-specific exceptions into DaoExceptions. Just as with other DAO implementations, we need to make some decisions about where and how we will get to our database. If you are working with a J2EE container that can provide you with a JNDI context, you might be tempted to use it. If it meets your needs, there is no reason not to. However, there are some tradeoffs when doing this. Although this approach will simplify the code, it will make testing more difficult. Depending on your requirements, this may be an acceptable sacrifice. In this example, we wanted to make things as testable as possible, so we used constructor-based injection to configure the DAO class at runtime. Because the iBATIS DAO does not allow this, we also created a default constructor that uses the two values we wanted as the defaults. In section 11.3, we look at using the Spring framework for our DAO layer, which allows us to do this via configuration files, but for now, let s use the default constructor method. The second constructor takes two parameters for the two settings I hardcoded into the default constructor. One of those was the determination of the LDAP DN attribute for our contact bean. This attribute is analogous to the primary key of a
Passivation event If the bean instance remains idle for a relatively long time between client requests, the EJB container may choose to evict it from the cache to conserve memory. The criteria used by the container to make this decision are vendor-specific, though usually influenced by the bean s deployment configuration. In general, to maximize limited memory the container will favor active bean instances. Before a bean instance is passivated, the container invokes its ejbPassivate() method to give it an opportunity to close any open resources and prepare its state to be written to secondary storage. Passive state In this state the bean instance s nontransient instance variables are written to secondary storage, usually the file system. The EJB container stores the bean s state relative to the client that created it. If the client calls on the bean to do subsequent work, the container knows where to find it. Meanwhile, by using secondary storage such as virtual memory the container s cache can be used for popular bean instances. Activation event While a bean instance is in the passivated state, its client may once again pick up the conversation by invoking one of the bean s business methods. At this point the container restores the passivated bean instance into the cache. When the bean has been successfully revived in the cache, the container invokes its ejbActivate() method. This gives the bean instance an opportunity to refresh any transient instance variables or reopen resources closed prior to passivation. Once this callback method has returned, the bean goes back into the method-ready state. Remove event At any time, a client may choose to end the conversation with its stateful session bean instance by invoking its remove() method. Prior to the bean instance actually being destroyed, the container invokes its ejbRemove() method to give it a chance to clean up any loose ends. Once destroyed, the bean instance s state is lost forever. A bean instance may also be destroyed if it s left idle for too long and its timeout value expires. This may occur while the bean is in the method ready or passivated state. Note, however, that when the timeout occurs on a passivated bean, the container is not required to invoke the bean instance s ejbRemove() method.
