In 3, you learned how to use WriteLine( ) to output messages to the console. Up until now, though, we haven t shown you how to get any input from your users. The looping statements that we ll introduce in the next section often go well with user input, so we ll cover that now. C# has a ReadLine( ) statement that corresponds to WriteLine( ), and as you might guess, it reads in a string from the console into a string variable. The use of ReadLine( ) is rather simple. To take input from the console and assign it to the string inputString, you d do this:

The next part of the name is the culture. This is normally used only on components that contain localized resources for applications that need to support multiple languages. Those kinds of assemblies usually contain no code they hold nothing but resources. Assemblies that contain code don t normally specify a culture, which is why we see Culture=neutral in the name for our MyLibrary assembly. Finally, there s the PublicKeyToken. This is null in our example, because we re not using it. But this is the part of the name that lets us say we don t just want any old assembly with a simple name of MyProgram. We can demand a specific bit of code by requiring the component to be signed.

As we ve noted, IBOutlets are only one of a few major types of connections that you can build into Interface Builder. You ve also seen delegate connections, which allow you to tie one object to another for purposes of delegation. You do this without ever setting the delegate property in Xcode: you link one object to the other in Interface Builder. The third major type of connection is the IBAction, which creates a connection that causes a method in your class file to be run whenever an action is sent to a UIControl. Building IBAction connections is almost exactly like building IBOutlet connections: you create a method declaration in the appropriate header file that uses IBAction as its return, and then you connect it to an appropriate action in Interface Builder; each object comes with all of the potential actions built in. Finally, in Xcode, you write the method that specifies what happens when the control is modified. We ll get into this in more depth in chapter 6.

The standard SOAP elements are shown in bold, and the application data, or the Reservation XML document fragment, is shown in regular text. SOAP s primary purpose is to establish a standard XML framework for packaging application data that is exchanged between different software platforms, such as Java and Perl, or Java and .NET. To do this, SOAP defines a set of elements, each designed to carry different data. The <Envelope> element is the root of the SOAP message; all other elements are contained by it. Within the <Envelope> element are two direct children: the <Header> element and the <Body> element. The <Header> element is generally used for carrying infrastructure data such as security tokens, transaction IDs, routing information, and so on. In the previous example, the <Header> element is empty, which is not unusual for basic web services. In many cases, we are only interested in exchanging information and not in more advanced issues, such as those relating to security and transactions. Although the <Body> element is required, the <Header> element is not. From this point forward, the <Header> element will be omitted from examples.

Our DVD store site has competitive prices and attracts people on a small budget. One of our features is to provide a search engine that targets prices below $15. The first step is to index prices using the padding technique described in chapter 4, and the second step is to create a filter implementation using RangeFilter. The bridge we used in section 4.1.3, (listing 4.6), suits our needs, and we ll reuse it. Listing 8.10 shows the filter implementation and its usage. Don t forget to apply the same logic applied by the price bridge to the value passed to the RangeFilter (in this case padding and rounding). The terms queried must match the terms indexed.
he Java Collections API has been part of the Java Foundation Classes (JFC) since the release of JDK 1.2. The Collections API was rapidly adopted by developers because of its flexibility and relative power. Most Java applications make use of at least a handful of the Collections classes, and domain models typically use collections to maintain multiple children for a parent object. For instance, our event management application makes use of multiple collections. One example of this is the collection of Attendees maintained by the Event class. If collections are used in the domain model, it s also logical that they would need to be persisted. Hibernate provides support for the core Collections interfaces: java.util.List, java.util.Map, and java.util.Set. Since there is a great deal of variability in how collections can be used by the domain model, Hibernate offers a number of ways to persist collections. Additionally,
Hibernate lists all columns and their last known nonstale values in the WHERE clause of the SQL statement. If any concurrent transaction has modified any of these values, or even deleted the row, this statement again returns with zero updated rows. Hibernate then throws a StaleObjectStateException. Alternatively, Hibernate includes only the modified properties in the restriction (only ITEM_PRICE, in this example) if you set optimistic-lock="dirty". This means two units of work may modify the same object concurrently, and a conflict is detected only if they both modify the same value-typed property (or a foreign key value). In most cases, this isn t a good strategy for business entities. Imagine that two people modify an auction item concurrently: One changes the price, the other the description. Even if these modifications don t conflict at the lowest level (the database row), they may conflict from a business logic perspective. Is it OK to change the price of an item if the description changed completely You also need to enable dynamic-update="true" on the class mapping of the entity if you want to use this strategy, Hibernate can t generate the SQL for these dynamic UPDATE statements at startup. We don t recommend versioning without a version or timestamp column in a new application; it s a little slower, it s more complex, and it doesn t work if you re using detached objects. Optimistic concurrency control in a Java Persistence application is pretty much the same as in Hibernate.
