You might be wondering exactly how string comparisons are performed. Some languages base string comparison on object identity so that "Abc" is not equal to a different string object that also contains "Abc". (That may seem weird, but in one sense it s consistent: comparing reference types always means asking do these two variables refer to the same thing ) But in C#, when you have distinct string objects, it performs a character-like comparison between strings, so any two strings containing the same sequence of characters are equal. This is different from how most reference types work, but by treating strings as a special case, the result is closer to what most people would expect. (Or at least to what most people who hadn t already become accustomed to the oddities of another language might expect.)

Different ORM solutions use different terminology and define different states and state transitions for the persistence lifecycle. Moreover, the object states used internally may be different from those exposed to the client application. Hibernate defines only four states, hiding the complexity of its internal implementation from the client code. The object states defined by Hibernate and their transitions in a state chart are shown in figure 9.1. You can also see the method calls to the persistence manager API that trigger transitions. This API in Hibernate is the Session. We discuss this chart in this chapter; refer to it whenever you need an overview. We ve also included the states of Java Persistence entity instances in figure 9.1. As you can see, they re almost equivalent to Hibernate s, and most methods of the Session have a counterpart on the EntityManager API (shown in italics). We say that Hibernate is a superset of the functionality provided by the subset standardized in Java Persistence. Some methods are available on both APIs; for example, the Session has a persist() operation with the same semantics as the EntityManager s counterpart. Others, like load() and getReference(), also share semantics, with a different method name. During its life, an object can transition from a transient object to a persistent object to a detached object. Let s explore the states and transitions in more detail.

This code combines a DES encryption class with a stream, a common tool in .NET applications for transferring data from one state or location to another. (Streams are a primary method used to read and write files.) Streams are not too hard to use, but the code still seems a little convoluted. Why doesn t the DESCryptoServiceProvider class simply include Encrypt and Decrypt methods That s my question, at least. I m sure it has something to do with keeping the class generic for use in many data environments. Still, as chunky as this code is, it s sure a lot easier than writing the encryption code myself. And it s general enough that I could swap in one of the other secret key algorithms without very much change in the code.
The Windows Forms techniques you learning in 18 are great, and they represent a major improvement in user experience over the console applications you ve used for most of this book. Time and familiarity have a way of changing expectations, though, and Windows Forms have been around for a very long time in programming years. As rival operating environments grow and mature, and people become accustomed to sophisticated interface design on the Web, users expectations for interfaces have changed. Although Windows Forms are powerful, they don t leave a whole lot of flexibility for designers to show off, and those designers who do try need to be programmers as well if they want to get the most out of Windows Forms. Microsoft has responded to those concerns with the Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF). The purpose of WPF is to provide a solution that s similar to the Windows Forms techniques you just learned, but provides greater flexibility of design. In Windows Forms, you used the visual designer to create the layout of the form, but you kept the code in a separate part of the file. WPF keeps the idea of separating the presentation (the look of the form) from the implementation (the event handler code), but it gives you direct control over the presentation. Instead of allowing access to only the Design view of your form in a visual interface, WPF represents the design in a form of XML, specifically created for WPF. This form of XML is called the XAML (pronounced ZAM-el ), which stands for eXtensible Application Markup Language.
