Associations represent relationships between entities, and the most natural way to present them in the world of objects is through properties. For example, you d expect an object representing a sales order to provide a property that refers to the related customer. That s exactly what the EF does, and it also works in reverse: the customer object provides a property that holds a collection of references to all the customer s orders. Example 14-4 shows a LINQ query that gets the number of SalesOrderHeader rows associated with each customer. It fetches one property from the Customer entity class that maps to a column in the database (CustomerID) and also uses a property called SalesOrderHeader, which represents the customer s orders.

In this chapter, you learned how to work with large and complex datasets efficiently. We first looked at Hibernate s cascading options and how transitive persistence can be enabled with Java Persitence and annotations. Then we covered the bulk operations in HQL and JPA QL and how you write batch procedures that work on a subset of data to avoid memory exhaustion. In the last section, you learned how to enable Hibernate data filtering and how you can create dynamic data views at the application level. Finally, we introduced the Hibernate Interceptor extension point, the Hibernate core event system, and the standard Java Persistence entity callback mechanism. Table 12.3 shows a summary you can use to compare native Hibernate features and Java Persistence. In the next chapter, we switch perspective and discuss how you retrieve objects from the database with the best-performing fetching and caching strategy.

As you ve seen, to work with database objects in SQLite, you must write the raw SQL code. Also, every time you want to add a record, you must write many lines of code that can t be reused in other areas. This is where the true power of Core Data comes in. In Core Data, you re working with only the class files that were generated from your data model. This allows you to manipulate them as you would any other object in Objective-C. Let s start by looking at the code to add an object to the database. Listing 9.12 shows the code for adding a new entity to the database.

When you choose Control, the Parameter properties panel of the dialog wakes up. You are asked to provide the ID of the Control containing the target parameter. Select GridView1. Once you ve made all your choices, the screen will resemble Figure 4-24. Click Add. When you do, the upper portion of the dialog returns to its initial (blank) state and the WHERE clause is added to the WHERE Clause window. You could add additional WHERE clauses at this point, to further restrict the data, but we won t for this example. Click OK to return to the Configure Select Statement dialog box. While you are at it, sort the results by the SalesOrderID column by clicking on the Order By button. The Add ORDER BY Clause dialog with the SalesOrderID column selected is shown in Figure 4-25. The ORDER BY clause is another SQL keyword, and this one does just what its name implies it sorts the results using the selected field for sort order. Click OK until the Configure Data Source Wizard is finished. Switch to Source view and again fix the name of the tables in the SQL statements that were auto-generated. The markup for the second GridView and its associated SqlDataSource is shown in Example 4-4, with the corrected table names highlighted.
So far, the only parameters that we have seen are input only you pass them into iBATIS, and (with the exception of the <selectKey> element) what you pass in remains unchanged. With stored procedures, you are given three types of parameters: IN, OUT, and INOUT. IN parameters are very simple to use with iBATIS and stored procedures. They are passed into the procedure just as you would pass a parameter into any other mapped statement. Here is a simple stored procedure that accepts two IN parameters and returns a value:
One of the tricky aspects of using the package mapper with <uptodate> is that the to path is relative to the <srcfiles> dir. This is resolved by ensuring that the <mapper> to attribute contains an absolute path. The absolute path can be obtained by using the location variant of <property>, which is covered in section 3.12.1. When using the <copy> task, the to mapper pattern is relative to the <copy> todir attribute, so converting to an absolute path is not necessary. If this example is a bit too esoteric, don t worry, as we will explain the <uptodate> in section 3.12.4, and the rationale for this particular mapping in chapter 4. A simpler yet perhaps marginally useful example is creating a flat directory tree of your source code:
Inheritance and custom types
The SDK is your toolbox. Its most important elements are Xcode, the IDE, and Interface Builder, the graphical object creator. Objective-C is your programming language. It s an object-oriented version of C that has some unique syntax thanks to its elegant Smalltalk inspiration. After you get used to it, you ll find it simple and easy to read. The iPhone OS is a layered set of frameworks, which contains everything you need to make your iPhone and iPad programming easy. Much of the rest of this book talks about how to make use of the right frameworks at the right time. With all that in your back pocket, you re ready to start programming using the SDK. This task will begin on the next page when you dive into the Xcode program that you downloaded at the start of this chapter.
LIVE GRIDVIEW FILTER
When dealing with a bidirectional many-to-many relationship, you have to mark one end of it as inverse. Which end you mark is your choice. By marking the set of Events on Attendee as inverse, you re telling Hibernate that the Event object is responsible for maintaining the relationship. Any changes made to the inverse end that aren t also made to the non-inverse end won t be saved. The above code is virtually identical to that for the Event.attendees field, except that the columns are reversed. The attendee_id is now the key column and the outward foreign key is now event_id. Here s what the Attendee.hbm.xml file will contain:
If you ve ever developed in Java, you ll recognize many familiar Java packages for core functionality. These packages provide basic computational support for things such as string management, input/output controls, math, and more. The following list contains some of the Java packages included in the Android SDK:
