If you start a Service by calling Context.startService(Intent service, Bundle b), as shown in listing 4.5, it runs in the background whether or not anything binds to it. If the service hasn t been created, the Service onCreate() method is called. The onStart(int id, Bundle args) method is called each time someone tries to start the service, whether or not it s already running. Additional instances of the Service won t be created. Caching in general has broad meaning. For example, in a traditional web application that contains presentation, service, and data access layers, it could make sense to cache on any or all of those layers. The iBATIS cache focuses on caching results within the persistence layer. As such, it is independent of the service or presentation layers, and is not based on object identity. In this chapter, we will look at how to configure, optimize, and even extend the iBATIS caching implementations.
When you were working with events, you found that the UIResponder class held many of the methods critical for event control. Similarly, you can access a lot of the methods important to SDK controls through the UIControl class. UIControl is a child of UIView (and thus UIResponder). It s the parent of important user interface controls such as UIButton, UISwitch, UIPageControl, UISegmentedControl, UISlider, and UITextField. It s not used for some other control-looking objects such as UISearchBar, so you should check the Apple class references before trying to use its functionality. Also note that the higher-level UIControl class can t be used on its own; it defines the common methods used by its children. The UIControl class contains several properties that control its basic setup, such as enabled (which determines whether it s on), highlighted (which determines its visual state), and selected (which sets Boolean state for appropriate sorts of controls, such as switches). You can also directly access a control s touch events with beginTrackingWithTouch:withEvent:, continueTrackingWithTouch:withEvent:, and endTrackingWithTouch:withEvent:, methods that work in a similar way to the event response functions that you played with in UIResponder. But you won t be using these methods, because they don t represent the simple advantages that you ll see when using control objects. For that, we turn to UIControl s action-target mechanism.
The simplest approach hinges on the series of messages having a header message that declares the length of the series, or the existence of a trailer message that tells the system when the last message has been received. The basic approach would be for a process to monitor the normal queue, pull the messages off, and store them in a temporary Azure table. The table should have an integer property that stores the order of that message in the series. Once the defined number of messages are received, or when the trailer message is received, the messages can be properly ordered (usually by some element present in the message themselves) and then sent on to the final system that needed the messages ordered properly. An optimization would be to have the process that s ordering the messages start trickling them on to the final destination when it knows that it has some of the messages already in order. For example, if messages arrive in the order 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 4, the message collator could almost immediately send messages 1, 2, and 3. The collator would have to wait for message 4 to arrive before it could forward messages 4, 5, and 6.
