TS RemoteApps is the single best feature added to Windows Server 2008, except for Hyper-V. But Hyper-V isn t exciting it just makes our jobs easier. TS RemoteApps is actually exciting, and it gives us a way to give our users a better experience. Terminal Services has always enabled us to allow users to run as if they were local, but actually using the power of the server. But TS RemoteApps makes the entire process transparent to the user. The application runs on the server, using the server s memory, CPU, and resources, but it displays on the user s computer just as if it were running locally. It s uncanny how natural it feels. We use it here in our of ce all the time. For example, Charlie doesn t like the 2007 Microsoft Of ce system, especially Microsoft Of ce Word 2007, preferring the interface and customizations he s created for Word 2003. But he rather likes the newer Microsoft Of ce Outlook 2007, so he runs Word 2003 locally but uses the Outlook 2007 that is installed on our terminal server. Because TS RemoteApps lets you create .msi les for deployment, you can use Group Policy to deploy the remote applications. The applications can even be con gured to take over the le association for a le type, just as if they were local applications, again making the user experience completely natural.

SQL Server 2005 introduces support for returning output from a data modification statement via a new OUTPUT clause. I like to think of this feature as "DML with Results." The OUTPUT clause is supported for INSERT, DELETE, and UPDATE statements. In the OUTPUT clause, you can refer to the special tables inserted and deleted. These special tables contain the rows affected by the data modification statementin their new, or after-modification and old, or before-modification versions, respectively. You use the inserted and deleted tables here much like you do in triggers. I will cover triggers at length in Inside T-SQL Programming; for now, it suffices to say that the inserted and deleted tables in a trigger hold the new and old images of the rows modified by the statement that fired the trigger. With INSERTs, you refer to the inserted table to identify attributes from the new

The WebService attribute is optional and is used to describe the service that will be offered to clients. The most important property of this attribute is Namespace, which is used to define a unique name for the XML Web service endpoints (the methods that are exposed). The Namespace property defaults to and should be changed before an XML Web service is released publicly; in our working example, we set the namespace to be The properties defined by the WebService attribute are listed in Table 19-2.
