Testing techniques are useful in providing a more thorough critical analysis of the capabilities and attributes of software features and aid us in increasing effective test coverage. It is important to realize that proper application of a testing technique is not a braindead or rote activity. Techniques are not some magical panacea in testing, and they are certainly not the only way we should approach software testing. In fact, the application of systematic software testing techniques for functional and structural testing requires extensive domain and system level knowledge, logical deduction, analytical reasoning, critical thinking, and a tester's cognitive ability to determine the outcome of a test or the accuracy of a preconceived hypothesis in a given context. And many techniques are extremely useful in helping us prove or disprove the existence of specific types or classes of defects or validate product functionality.
