single approach to testing is effective in exposing all types of defects or completely evaluating the capabilities of software; this dilemma is known as the pesticide paradox. The pesticide paradox is derived from Beizer's First Law: "Every method you use to prevent or find bugs leaves a residue of subtler bugs against which those methods are ineffectual." Essentially, there is no single technique or approach that is completely effective in software testing, so by increasing the diversity of methods used in testing and considering different perspectives, we are more likely to be successful in both exposing potential issues as well as increasing the effectiveness of our testing. Organic gardening is a lot of work and presents some unique challenges. But it is worth the effort when I watch my 6-year-old daughter pick a banana pepper or a cherry to-mato off the vine and eat it while harvesting our bounty. Likewise, software testing is hard work and has inimitable challenges, but when done correctly using a variety of approaches, the rewards can be great for the entire product team. Another benefit of functional testing techniques is the potential to instill a high level of confidence in testing coverage of specific functional areas of the product with a fewer number of redundant tests. However, as I previously stated, the value or effectiveness of using any test technique ultimately depends on the individual tester's system and domain knowledge and ability to apply the applicable technique in the correct situation. It is important to remember that functional testing techniques are merely tools used by professional testers to help gather important information about the capabilities and attributes of software and to help us expose potential issues. We must know which techniques to use in a specific situation and how to use those techniques effectively. Are Testing Techniques Foolish Gimmicks Some people suggest that techniques are foolish gimmicks or they are too trivial to worry about. I suppose to an untrained observer techniques can seem like thoughtless tricks. But a technique is a systematic procedure that simply provides one approach to solve one type of complex problem, often relying on well-established heuristics. Many professionals use techniques, and when techniques are properly used by a skilled tester, they can be effective tools. Testing techniques are useful in providing a more thorough critical analysis of the capabilities and attributes of software features and aid us in increasing effective test coverage. It is important to realize that proper application of a testing technique is not a braindead or rote activity. Techniques are not some magical panacea in testing, and they are certainly not the only way we should approach software testing. In fact, the application of systematic software testing techniques for functional and structural testing requires extensive domain and system level knowledge, logical deduction, analytical reasoning, critical thinking, and a tester's cognitive ability to determine the outcome of a test or the accuracy of a preconceived hypothesis in a given context. And many techniques are extremely useful in helping us prove or disprove the existence of specific types or classes of defects or validate product functionality. Functional testing techniques such as boundary value analysis (BVA), equivalence class partitioning (ECP), combinatorial analysis, and state transition testing are similar to tools in a toolbox, and each tool serves different purposes. Used correctly in the appropriate situation, these tools can be quite effective in helping testers systematically evaluate specific functional attributes of software features. Systematic testing techniques are not the only tools in a professional tester's toolbox and are best applied when more detailed handiwork is required. But we must remember that to be effective any tool in our toolbox requires an intelligent and knowledgeable person who knows how and when to use the tool as a potential solution in the proper context.

Sketching directly on the story template connects you back with the verbal story you wrote and helps you see what you re trying to accomplish from a different perspective. To sketch directly on the story template while you work with a team, place a screen capture of the story template on a PowerPoint slide and mark it up while it is displayed on a screen in the room.

Table 4-2: WDBG Main Subsystems Subsystem LOCALDEBUG.DLL Description This module contains the debug loop. Because I wanted to be able to reuse this debug loop, the user code, WDBG.EXE in this case, passes a C++ class derived from CDebugBaseUser (defined in DEBUGINTERFACE.H) to the debug loop. The debug loop will call into that class when any of the debugging events occurs. The user's class is responsible for all synchronization. For WDBG.EXE, WDBGUSER.H and WDBGUSER.CPP contain the WDBG.EXE uses simple coordinating class. SendMessage synchronization. In other words, the debug thread sends a message to the UI thread and blocks until the UI thread returns. If the debugging event is one that required user input, the debug thread blocks after the send message on a synchronization event. Once the UI thread processes the Go command, it sets the synchronization event and the debug thread starts running again. This simple module is just a wrapper around the API functions for manipulating the debuggee's memory and registers. By using the interface defined in this module, WDBG.EXE and I386CPUHELP.DLL can instantly handle remote debugging just by replacing this module. This module is the IA32 (Pentium) helper module. Although this module is specific to Pentium processors, its interface, CPUHELP.H, is CPU-independent. If you defined in wanted to port WDBG to a different processor, this module is the only one you should have to replace. The disassembler in this module came from the Dr. Watson sample code that used to ship in the Platform SDK. Although the disassembler works, it appears to need updating to support the later Pentium CPU variants.

Part V
Configuring Health Monitoring
Probably the most-used hybrid thread synchronization construct is the Monitor class, which provides a mutual-exclusive lock supporting spinning, thread ownership, and recursion . This is the most-used construct because it has been around the longest, C# has a built-in keyword to support it, the just-in-time (JIT) compiler has built-in knowledge of it, and the common language runtime (CLR) itself uses it on your application s behalf . However, as you ll see, there are many problems with this construct, making it easy to produce buggy code . I ll start by explaining the construct, and then I ll show the problems and some ways to work around these problems .

Page 310 you provided in the code, and then calls the PublishMe() function to start the publishing process. There are two functions left to write for this e-service: the PublishMe() function, which you ll write next, and the ClosePubWiz() function that closes the Publish Wizard window, which you will call from the PublishMe() function. To add the PublishMe() function, type the following code after the closing curly bracket of the MyOnWizardBack() function. // This function starts the publishing process. function PublishMe(){ // Use try/catch error handling to verify publish validation. try{ // Verify that a presentation doesn't exist with the same name. var bDoesNotExist =Application.Publisher.ValidatePublishPresentation(); // Test whether ValidatePublishPresentation was successful. if (bDoesNotExist == true){ // Publish the presentation. Application.Publisher.PublishPresentation() // Tell the user it is done. alert("Publish complete."); // Close the wizard. ClosePubWiz();
