The plan shows that our covering index was fully scanned in order. The maximum orderdate was isolated for each shipperid by the Stream Aggregate operator. Then the filter operator filtered only shippers for whom the maximum orderdate was before '20010101'. Here are the vital performance measures I got for this query: Logical reads: 2730 CPU time: 670 ms Elapsed time: 732 ms Note that you might get slightly different performance measures. At this point, you need to ask yourself if you're happy with the result, and if you're not, whether there's potential for optimization at all. Of course, this solution is a big improvement over the cursor-based one, both in terms of performance and code readability and maintenance. However, a run time of close to one second for such a query might not be satisfactory. Keep in mind that an Orders tables in some production environments can contain far more than one million rows. If you determine that you want to tune the solution further, you now need to figure out whether there's potential for optimization. Remember that in the execution plan for the last query, the leaf level of the index was fully scanned to obtain the latest orderdate for each shipper. That scan required 2730 page reads. Our Shippers table contains 12 shippers. Your gut feelings should tell you that there must be a way to obtain the data with much fewer reads. In our index, the rows are sorted by shipperid and orderdate. This means that there are groups of rowsa group for each shipperidwhere the last row in each group contains the latest orderdate that you want to inspect. Alas, the optimizer currently doesn't have the logic within it to "zigzag" between the levels of the index, jumping from one shipper's latest orderdate to the next. If it had, the query would have incurred substantially less I/O. By the way, such zigzagging logic can be beneficial for other types of requestsfor example, requests involving filters on a non-first index column and others as well. But I won't digress. Of course, if you request the latest orderdate for a particular shipper, the optimizer can use a seek directly to the last shipper's row in the index. Such a seek would cost 3 reads in our case. Then the optimizer can apply a TOP operator going one step backwards, returning the desired valuethe latest orderdate for the given shipperto a Stream Aggregate operator. The following query demonstrates acquiring the latest orderdate for a particular shipper, producing the execution plan shown in Figure 3-63: SELECT MAX(orderdate) FROM dbo.Orders WHERE shipperid = 'A';

Although you will be able to make almost unlimited adjustments to the layout that you choose, keep in mind that to maximize the effectiveness of a dashboard, you want to keep the dashboard visible on a single screen. After you select the layout that you want to use, the New Dashboard window appears. Enter the name of the dashboard in the Name field. To configure the components that come with the dashboard layout, simply rest the mouse on the appropriate icon and select the component to insert, as indicated in Figure 13-18.

Click Close to close the Set Up Virtual Private Networking Warning Details page and then click Finish to close the wizard. If you don t have UPnP enabled on your router, open Internet Explorer and log on to the router. The details for each router are different, but you need to con gure the router to forward port 1723 to the IP address of the SBS server. You may also need to con gure PPTP Passthrough. Most routers have an automatic method (often called Virtual Servers) for con guring port forwarding. Consult your router documentation. After the router is con gured, you ll probably need to restart the router. When you do, VPNs will be enabled on your SBS network.

An infotext appears whenever you point to a character with the mouse . If you click a character, its display is enlarged . You can use the mouse to drag and drop an enlarged character into an Excel cell . However, this is an unnecessarily complicated procedure, as we ll see later .

The Java java.net.Stack class has been around since Java 1.0 and is derived from the Vector class. This presents a potential misuse problem whereby a reference to a Stack can be cast to a Vector, allowing the underlying elements to be manipulated as a list. The .NET implementation isn't derived from any other collection and can't be misused in this manner. Table 9-6 shows the mapping between the Java and .NET stack classes.

In the early 2000s, SharePoint emerged as a highly leveraged way for organizations to build portals and collaboration environments . For example, coordinating large teams toward a common goal is an excellent reason for creating a portal . Team endeavors such as software development require systems such as version control and bug tracking . If the team is distributed geographically or is in some other way not part of the office network, the next logical step is to share information over the Web . Without a framework such as SharePoint, developers would likely duplicate much effort between them . SharePoint introduces some prefabricated components to ease building collaboration sites (rather than building them from scratch) . SharePoint Web pages are based on a type of component named Web Parts . Web Parts are a way to package information and functionality for users . Whereas SharePoint is a stand-alone framework dedicated to building collaboration portals, modern ASP .NET represents a broad-spectrum Web development framework that happens to have a built-in portal framework . That is, SharePoint represents a dedicated means to build portals, and ASP .NET includes some classes useful for building portal-like applications . However, even though they re different development environments, they do share a principal concept between them Web Parts . Although ASP .NET Web Parts and SharePoint Web Parts aren t exactly the same animal, they operate similarly .
The Microsoft Office system is available in a variety of versions, each designed with a specific user group in mind. Here s a quick overview of the different versions, along with the applications included in each one:
