The type implementing the IFormattable interface s ToString method determines which format strings it s going to recognize . If you pass a format string that the type doesn t recognize, the type is supposed to throw a System.FormatException . Many of the types Microsoft has defined in the FCL recognize several formats . For example, the DateTime type supports d for short date, D for long date, g for general, M for month/day, s for sortable, T for long time, u for universal time in ISO 8601 format, U for universal time in full date format, Y for year/month, and others . All enumerated types support G for general, F for flags, D decimal, and X for hexadecimal . I ll cover formatting enumerated types in more detail in 15, Enumerated Types and Bit Flags . Also, all of the built-in numeric types support C for currency, D for decimal, E for exponential (scientific) notation, F for fixed-point, G for general, N for number, P for percent, R for round-trip, and X for hexadecimal . In fact, the numeric types also support picture format strings just in case the simple format strings don t offer you exactly what

The NOCYCLE keyword in the CONNECT BY clause is optional; however, if you omit NOCYCLE, you risk ending up in a loop. If that happens, the Oracle DBMS returns the following error message: ORA-01436: CONNECT BY loop in user data Our EMPLOYEES table doesn t contain any cyclic references, but specifying NOCYCLE never hurts. Pay special attention to the placement of the PRIOR operator. The PRIOR operator always points to the parent row. In Listing 9-19, PRIOR is placed before EMPNO, so we are able to find parent rows by starting from the MGR column value of the current row and then searching the EMPNO column values in all other rows for a match. If you put PRIOR in the wrong place, you define hierarchical relationships in the opposite direction. Just see what happens in Listing 9-19 if you change the fourth line to CONNECT BY PRIOR mgr = EMPNO or to CONNECT BY EmPnO = PRIOR MGR. At first sight, the result in Listing 9-19 is not very impressive, since you just get a list of employee names, followed by a number. And if we had omitted LEVEL from the SELECT clause, the result would have been completely trivial. However, many things happened behind the scenes. We just have not exploited the full benefits yet.

Studio performance. It might makes sense to break a module or set of modules into a separate solution to manage this if you choose to follow a one module per assembly Visual Studio project structure. .xap File and Module Factoring For Silverlight applications, modules are typically packaged in separate .xap files, although in some cases, you may have more than one module per .xap file. You should consider how many .xap files you need so that you can minimize the number and size of download requests required for the application to start and enable a new feature. If you choose to separate each module into its own project or assembly, you then need to decide whether to put each assembly in its own .xap file for deployment or whether to include multiple assemblies in a single .xap file. Some factors that influence your choice of whether to include multiple modules in a single .xap file or to separate them include the following: Download size and shared dependencies. Each .xap file has a small amount of additional size overhead in its manifest and .zip file packaging. Also, if there are common dependencies between the modules and they are not separated into a dependent module or cached library, each .xap file will include those dependent libraries, which could significantly increase the download size. The timing of when multiple modules are needed by the application. If multiple modules are loaded and used at the same time, such as presenting views at the startup of the application, packaging them in a single .xap file might make the download slightly faster and help ensure that both modules become physically available to the client at the same time. The modularity feature of Prism ensures that modules that indicate dependencies are loaded in the right order. You can use this feature to make sure that there is no improper load order when the modules are split across multiple . xap files. But there is a small amount of performance overhead involved in making two downloads instead of one, even if it is the same total download size. Module versioning. If different modules will be developed on independent timelines and potentially deployed separately, you will want to put them into separate . xap files so that they can be marked with different versions more cleanly and updated independently. To avoid downloading the same assemblies more than once in separate .xap files, you can use either of the following approaches: Factor shared dependencies into a separate infrastructure module, and have the consuming modules take a dependency on that shared module. Use Assembly Library Caching in Silverlight to put the shared types into a shared library that is downloaded once and cached by Silverlight instead of the Prism module downloader.

global.asax This file contains code that is run for application events, including Application_Start. Dynamic Data uses this file to call RegisterRoutes at Application_ Start. This method connects your data context to a meta-model and uses ASP.NET routing to handle page requests for tables and actions (such as List, Details, Edit, and Insert). site.css This file represents a style sheet used by the master page and related page templates. You can customize this style sheet to change the look of your Dynamic Data site. site.master This is the master page for the Dynamic Data site. By default, it defines navigation for the site, a ScriptManager control, and the main ContentPlaceHolder control. The Site.master page is used by the page templates. Web.config This is a less verbose version of the Web.config file that is created for standard ASP.NET websites.

The Office Groove 2007 workspace window is organized to help you navigate easily among all your team communication and project tasks (see Figure 11-3). The title bar of the open workspace window displays the name of the current workspace; the familiar menu bar offers commands for managing files, working with tools, changing the view, and setting preferences. Use the Workspaces button on the menu bar to move among your various workspaces. The context-sensitive Common Tasks pane in the lower-right corner of the workspace also offers useful functions based on where you are in the workspace or what you ve clicked. If you create a Standard workspace, which is the most common way to begin a workspace, it automatically contains a Files tool and a Discussion tool. When you open the workspace, the Files tool is selected by default, and a set of buttons for working with files stretches across the top of the work area. Each tool has its own unique menu button just below the familiar Windows-style menu options. At any time during your project, you or your team members (depending on the permissions you ve set) can add a variety of additional tools to your workspace (which you ll learn about in the next section).

The listing below is a slightly more complicated example. This piece of code is used throughout the chapter and contains a few possible errors.
The namespace root is the most important part of the namespace. Without it, clients cannot access any DFS folders. Because of this, the rst step in creating a more fault-tolerant namespace is to add namespace servers to the namespace root. If possible, add at least one namespace server on each site where users need access to the DFS Namespace by following these steps:

This controller implementation shows the retrieval of the id parameter that is passed from the listConferences pages. Just like with normal servlet development, the parameter is extracted from HttpServletRequest, converted to an integer, and used to retrieve a ConferenceSummary DTO from the conferenceService. The DTO is then passed to the view under the name conference . Listing 6-37. GetHistory returns a collection of WizardStep objects. The order of the items is determined by the order in which the wizard s pages were accessed by the user. The first WizardStep object returned the one with an index of 0 is the currently selected step. The second object represents the view before the current one, and so on. The second method, MoveTo, is used to move to a particular wizard step. The method s prototype is described here:
In ASP.NET 2.0, state management is much the same as in ASP.NET 1.x. Sure, you get a few cool new features, but the underlying architecture is nearly identical. In most cases, the changes are ones that would have fit into version 1.x if the team had had more time. Overall, the new state management features are in response to user requirements or are necessary enhancements. For example, control state was introduced to avoid common errors and pitfalls in control development. The new session and cache features clearly resulted from repeated user requests, particularly the database cache dependency (which is available only for SQL Server 7.0 and later). You cannot use the SqlCacheDependency class to control changes to an Oracle or a Microsoft Access database. However, the cache dependency mechanism has been abstracted enough that smart developers can write custom invalidation mechanisms.
