When you build a claims-based application, it needs to know how to validate the incoming security token and how to parse the claims that are inside. The Windows Identity Foundation (WIF) provides a common programming model for claims that can be used by both Windows Communication Foundation (WCF) and ASP.NET applications. If you already know how to use methods such as IsInRole and properties such as Identity.Name, you ll be happy to know that WIF simply adds one more property that is named Identity.Claims. It identi es the claims that were issued, who issued them, and what they contain. There s certainly more to learn more about WIF programming model, but for now just remember to reference the WIF assembly (Microsoft.IdentityModel.dll) from your ASP.NET applications and WCF services in order to use WIF s programming paradigm.

This is your application s project file (also called a pro file, because its suffix is .pro), and defines the libraries your application links to, the source files that need to be compiled, and so forth. As we go along in the book, you ll learn to make small, targeted changes to this file (say, to add a library or an application icon), but in general, you probably won t need to edit it much, because the IDE does most of the heavy lifting. The project file is the input to qmake, Qt s metamake utility is responsible for analyzing project dependencies and coming up with a make file used by a specific platform s SDK, such as MinGW, the Symbian build chain, or the GNU cross-compilation tools for MeeGo. It s declarative in that you specify values for variables (such as SOURCES, a list of the source files from which your application builds), and qmake figures out the rest. Next up is the Forms folder, which contains one file: the file you ve been working on in the Qt Designer. The Qt Designer creates the XML you see in the form files that bear the .ui extension. The Qt Designer represents the interface as XML, so you shouldn t edit the XML directly. At compile time, these files get converted to C++ class declarations for your UI. That gives you the flexibility of a visual designer at development time and the performance of carefully tuned C++ at run time, so that there s no latency in setting up a complicated application UI. TIP: The IDE won t let you edit the XML directly, but of course with Emacs and caffeine, you can do whatever you want. We don t advise it.

Figure 14-1: Extracting and displaying the contents of the XML data island. As mentioned, when Internet Explorer encounters the <xml> tag, it extracts the XML data and initializes an XMLDOMDocument COM object. The object is created and returned by an internal instance of the MSXML parser. Internet Explorer calls the loadXML method on the parser and initializes the XML DOM object using the data island contents. The document instance is then added to the HTML object model and made available to scripts via the document.all collection, as shown here: var doc = document.all("xmldoc"); The document.all property is a name/value collection that contains all the elements found in the HTML page. To simplify coding, Internet Explorer also provides an object instance named as the ID of the data island. The data island contents can be referenced using either the document.all collection or the property with the same name as the ID. Once you hold the reference to the data island, you use the XMLDocument property to access the actual contents, as shown here: var dataIslandText = xmldoc.XMLDocument.xml; This expression demonstrates how to access the entire XML text stored in the data island. If you need to access a subset of the XML DOM object, you can narrow the set of nodes by using an XPath query or by moving to a particular root node. Handling Parsing Errors If errors occur during the parsing of the data island contents, Internet Explorer does not raise exceptions; any error is silently trapped and a null object is returned. The code shown in the previous section for accessing the data island does not produce run-time errors in the case of badly formed XML text, but an empty string is returned. To check for errors, use the parseError property of the XMLDOMDocument object. The parseError property is a reference to an XMLDOMParseError object. The XMLDOMParseError object returns information about the last parser error. This information includes the error number, line number, character position, and a text description. 485

If you want your most frequently used cached objects to stay in your cache longer, you can specify a sliding expiration. A sliding expiration indicates the amount of time that must elapse between subsequent requests before an item is removed from the cache. Each time a new request comes in for an item, the sliding scale restarts. You set a sliding expiration by passing a TimeSpan to the slidingExpiration parameter of the Insert method. The TimeSpan is the time after the last read request that the cached object will be retained. This example shows you how to keep an object in cache for 10 minutes after the last request.

Visual Studio has quite a history. The first version was called Visual Studio 97, which was most commonly known for Visual Basic 5.0. In 1998, Microsoft released Visual Studio 6.0. That version included Visual Basic 6.0, as well as Microsoft s first web-based development tool, Visual InterDev 1.0, which was used to develop ASP applications. Next came the introduction of Microsoft .NET and ASP.NET 1.0, prompting Visual Studio.NET. As Microsoft was enhancing and releasing new versions of Microsoft .NET and ASP.NET, it also continued enhancing Visual Studio by releasing Visual Studio 2003 and then Visual Studio 2005. In addition, Microsoft has introduced a line of free development tools known as the Visual Studio Express tools, as well as the Visual Studio Team System, which can be used by large programming teams to build enterprise-level systems. This brings us to the latest version of Visual Studio, which Microsoft developed under the code name Orcas and has now dubbed Visual Studio 2008.

Testing Techniques for S+S
If you re using the SciTE editor that came with the Ruby installer for Windows, you can run Ruby programs directly from the IDE after you ve done some basic setup. First, it is essential that c:\ruby\bin is in your system path so that SciTE can find the Ruby interpreter. The general process for setting your system path in Windows is to right-click the My Computer icon on your desktop, choose Properties, go to the Advanced tab, click the Environment Variables button, click the Path variable in the System variables list, and then click Edit. It is essential that you do not remove or change anything already in your path, but simply add ;c:\ruby\bin to the end of it, and then click the OK buttons to work your way back out again.

Part I:
When you override either of these two targets they will be called at the appropriate time. If you are creating customizations to a speci c project le, this is a great way to go. If you are creating reusable MSBuild scripts then you must chose to inject your targets into the clean process instead of taking this approach. This is because if the same target gets declared more than once, then the last target declared will be the de nition that is used. All other target declarations will be ignored. In order to inject a target into the clean process, the CleanDependsOn property must be extended. This is demonstrated by the following snippet taken from the WindowsApplicaton3.csproj le.
As you can see, the master page looks like a standard ASP.NET page. Aside from the identifying @Master directive, the only key difference is the ContentPlaceHolder control. A page bound to this master automatically inherits all the contents of the master and has a chance to attach custom markup and server controls to each defined placeholder.
