Layers communicate from top to bottom. A layer is dependent only on the layer directly below it. Each layer is unaware of any other layers except for the layer just below it.

sensible defaults, and JPA, all of which you will be learning about in this book. Although the number of EJB services is significant, you ll find them very intuitive. For the most part, EJB 3 has a practical outlook and doesn t demand that you understand the theoretical intricacies. In fact, most EJB services are designed to give you a break from this mode of thinking so you can focus on getting the job done and go home at the end of the day knowing you accomplished something. Integrated solution stack EJB 3 offers a complete stack of server solutions, including persistence, messaging, lightweight scheduling, remoting, web services, dependency injection (DI), and interceptors. This means that you won t have to spend a lot of time looking for third-party tools to integrate into your application. In addition, EJB 3 provides seamless integration with other Java EE technologies, such as JDBC, JavaMail, Java Transaction API JTA (JTA), Java Messaging Service (JMS), Java Authentication and Authorization Service (JAAS), Java Naming and Directory Interface (JNDI), Java Remote Method Invocation (RMI), and so on. EJB is also guaranteed to seamlessly integrate with presentation-tier technologies like JavaServer Pages (JSP), servlets, JavaServer Faces (JSF), and Swing. Open Java EE standard EJB is a critical part of the Java EE standard. This is an extremely important concept to grasp if you are to adopt EJB 3. EJB 3 has an open, public API specification, which organizations are encouraged to use to create a container or persistence provider implementation. The EJB 3 standard is developed by the Java Community Process (JCP), consisting of a nonexclusive group of individuals driving the Java standard. The open standard leads to broader vendor support for EJB 3, which means you don t have to depend on a proprietary solution. Broad vendor support EJB is supported by a large and diverse variety of independent organizations. This includes the technology world s largest, most respected, and most financially strong names, such as Oracle and IBM, as well as passionate and energetic open source groups like JBoss and Geronimo. Wide vendor support translates to three important advantages for you. First, you are not at the mercy of the ups and downs of a particular company or group of people. Second, a lot of people have concrete long-term interests to keep the technology as competitive as possible. You can essentially count on being able to

The next example shows an element with three attributes. The element in this case is self-contained in that the element tag describes both the beginning and ending tag. The beginning is indicated by <Customer and the end of the tag is denoted by the />. Attributes are specified as name=value pairs. Attribute values must be enclosed in quotes.

We aren t going to cover how to use the <javadoc> task because it would take far too long. It has 50-some parameters and over a dozen nested elements that show how complex creating the documentation can be. The underlying javadoc program has about 25 arguments; the complexity in the task is mainly to provide detailed control as to what that program does. Fortunately, only three arguments are required: the source and destination directories, and a list of files to document. The source attribute and <source> nested element let you name the Java files to document, but specifying packages is usually much easier, especially when you can give a wildcard to import an entire tree. There are three ways to specify a package, as listed in table 6.1. For any complex project, the standard tactic is to list the packages to compile with nested <package> elements, using wild cards to keep the number of declarations to a minimum.

We formulate a web service request in FlickrService, using the service function we want to call plus its parameters. Our FlickrService has two function types (event callbacks), onSuccess and onFailure, called upon the outcome of a web service request. We implement functions for these to deal with the data once it has loaded or handle any errors. Now that everything is in place, we use JavaFX s HttpRequest to execute the request itself. It begins running in the background, allowing the current GUI thread to continue running unblocked. If the HttpRequest fails, onFailure will be called. If we get as far as an InputStream, we create a parser (JavaFX s PullParser) to deal with the XML returned by the web service. The parser invokes an event callback function as incoming nodes are received, which we assign to a function, xmlEvent() in FlickrResult, a class designed to store data received from the web service. The callback function in FlickrResult parses each start tag in the XML. For each photo it creates and stores a new FlickrPhoto object. Once the parsing is finished, execution returns to onInput() in FlickrService, which calls onSuccess with the resulting data. In the onSuccess function we can now do whatever we want with the data loaded from the service.
