Figure 13-8: Send a Smile user interface. The Send a Smile program is relatively new, and not all Microsoft groups are using it at this time. The system does have an enormous amount of potential for gathering customer input. It encourages customers to provide quick, spontaneous feedback at any time. Think about all of the times you have been frustrated with an application and couldn't do anything but groan about the problem or the times you were using a new piece of software and were a bit surprised how well it worked for you. Programs like Send a Smile provide users an opportunity to provide this feedback immediately.

Before we go any further into this overview of the key groups of classes, let's look at readers and writers in general. Readers and writers represent two rather generic software components that find several concrete (and powerful) implementations throughout the .NET Framework. The reader component provides a relatively common programming interface to read information out of a file or a stream. The writer component offers a common set of methods to write information down to a file or a stream in a format-independent way. Not surprisingly, readers operate in read-only mode, whereas writers accomplish their tasks operating in write-only mode. .NET Framework Readers and Writers In the .NET Framework, the classes available from the System.IO namespace provide for both synchronous and asynchronous read/write operations on two distinct categories of data: streams and files. A file is an ordered and named collection of bytes and is persistently stored to a disk. A stream represents a block of bytes that is read from, and written to, a data store. The data store can be based on a variety of storage media, including memory, disk files, and remote URLs. A stream is a kind of superset of a file, or in other words, a file that can be saved to a variety of storage media including memory. To work with streams, the .NET Framework defines several flavors of reader and writer classes. Figure 1-1 shows how each class relates to the others.

CHAPTER 2 WORKING WITH LISTS IN SHAREPOINT
If you understand PHP coding, the process of this module should be straightforward. After the check to make sure the code is executing under Joomla, the $myLocation variable is created. You can see that it uses the get() method of the $params object to obtain the current value of the module parameter called location, which was defined earlier in the XML descriptor file. A second variable, named $myDateTime, is set to a formatted string holding the current system time and date. If you want to actually use this module, you may have to make some adjustments to the time if the web server that hosts your site resides in a different time zone than the location parameter indicates. The lines of code that follow these definitions use the echo() function to output the text to the browser page. You might notice that all of the text is sent to the JText::_() method. This Joomla method sends any text passed to it to the Language Manager. If a language other than the default is selected for display, and the Language Manager (or Joom!Fish) has a translation of the current text in the selected language, the translation will be substituted and returned by the method. If not, the same text that was sent will simply be returned. Using this method allows your extension to expose itself to the Joomla internationalization features where, if translation text exists in the system, it can output text that can be read in one of the dozens of languages Joomla supports. Archive the folder with both files into a file named after the module (e.g., mod_hellofrom.zip). To install this module, go to the Extension Manager, browse to the archive file, and install it. Once installed, you can publish the module, set the location parameter (see Figure 13-2), and select where the module will be displayed in the Module Manager. Click the Save button to store these parameters to the Joomla system.
The ASP .NET Session object can store any (serializable) object running in the CLR . That goes for larger data not just small strings or other scalar types . One of the most common uses for the Session object is for implementing features such as shopping carts or any other data that has to go with a particular client . For example, in a commerce-oriented site where customers can purchase products, you would probably implement a central database representing your inventory . Then, as users sign on, they have the opportunity to select items from your inventory and place them in a temporary holding area associated with the session they re running . In ASP .NET, that holding area is typically the Session object . A number of different collections are useful for managing shopping cart like scenarios . Probably the easiest to use is the good ole ArrayList, an automatically sizing array that supports both random access and the IList interface . However, for other scenarios you might use a small DataTable, a DataSet, or some other more complex type . Keep in mind that DataTable and DataSet have more features than necessary for some situations, which could lead to bloated session state if you re not careful . 10, Data Binding, takes a quick look at ADO and data access . The next example revisits data-bound controls (the DataList and the GridView) . You also work with the DataTable in depth . The example illustrates using ADO .NET objects, data-bound controls, and session state to transfer items from an inventory (represented as a DataList) to a collection of selected items (represented as a GridView) .
The black rectangle is drawn on top of the red one, as shown in Figure 4-1.

The SqlDataSource control is used to configure access to relational databases such as SQL Server and Oracle. It can also be configured to work with Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) and Object Linking and Embedding (OLE) Db data connections. You configure the control to connect to one of these database types. The code inside the control will then use the appropriate data provider based on your configuration settings, including ADO.NET provider classes for SqlClient, OracleClient, OleDb, and Odbc. You configure the SqlDataSource control by first setting its ID property to a unique identifying string value. This property is similar to any other web control ID property. However, the value is used when referring to the data source during data binding (which will be discussed later in this section). You then set the ConnectionString property either to a valid connection string or to page script that reads the connection string from the Web.config file (as shown in the next code example). You then set various command properties, including commands for selecting, inserting, updating, and deleting data. The command properties you set are based on how you intend to use the control. For example, you use the SelectCommand to define an SQL statement that can be used to retrieve data from a database. In this case, you would use the Text SelectCommandType (which is the default). You can also set the SelectCommandType to StoredProcedure and then provide a stored procedure name for the SelectCommand attribute.
Configuring the DHCP Relay Agent
The supplementary state includes a CancellationToken, a collection of ContinueWithTask objects, a collection of Task objects for child tasks that have thrown unhandled exceptions, and more . My point is that while tasks provide you a lot of features, there is some cost to tasks because memory must be allocated for all this state . If you don t need the additional features offered by tasks, then your program will use resources more efficiently if you use ThreadPool.QueueUserWorkItem . The Task and Task<TResult> classes implement the IDisposable interface, allowing you to call Dispose when you are done with the Task object . Today, all the Dispose method does is close the ManualResetEventSlim object . However, it is possible to define classes derived from Task and Task<TResult>, and these classes could allocate their own resources, which would be freed in their override of the Dispose method . Of course, most developers will not explicitly call Dispose on a Task object in their code; instead, they will just let the garbage collector clean up any resources when it determines that they are no longer in use . You ll notice that each Task object contains an Int32 field representing a Task s unique ID . When you create a Task object, the field is initialized to zero . Then the first time you query Task s read-only Id property, the property assigns a unique Int32 value to this field and returns it from the property . Task IDs start at 1 and increment by 1 as each ID is assigned . Just looking at a Task object in the Microsoft Visual Studio debugger will cause the debugger to display the Task s ID, forcing the Task to be assigned an ID . The idea behind the ID is that each Task can be identified by a unique value . In fact, Visual Studio shows you these task IDs in its Parallel Tasks and Parallel Stacks windows . But since you don t assign the IDs yourself in your code, it is practically impossible to correlate an ID number with what your code is doing . While running a task s code, you can query Task s static CurrentId property, which returns a nullable Int32 (Int32 ) . You can also call this from Visual Studio s Watch window or Immediate window while debugging to get the ID for the code that you are currently stepping through . Then you can find your task in the Parallel Tasks/Stacks windows . If you query the CurrentId property while a task is not executing, it returns null . During a Task object s existence, you can learn where it is in its lifecycle by querying Task s read-only Status property . This property returns a TaskStatus value that is defined as follows:
